My prediction having followed passageweather's site for some time is that those numbers for wind and sea are closer to averages. Maximums are considerably greater. A 980 mb low is intense even in temperate latitudes.
I would also try to time the Cape Horn passage between systems. That was the problem with the late start which I guess everyone including her team knew would be an issue.

The boat is capable of 200 mile days in strong winds. I think they may have to slow the boat down so that she doesn't go straight into a storm. Problem is there is another stronger storm behind. Scary times.

I think it's clear from a look at her Location and Route page - Abby Sunderland | Abigail Sunderland | Wild Eyes | Solo Circumnavigation | Shoecity.com Sponsor - that her weather routers are trying to position her to round the Horn at the optimum time. I suspect that they'll try to align her passage with the lesser of a series of lows as she tries to get 'round.

Let's all hope for the best for Abby and a safe arrival in the Atlantic.

Wooo! According to NOA it would seem the worst has passed for the next few days. There appears to be some rough stuff coming in but is nearly seven days away. So it looks like our wee Abby might just sneak through without too much hardship. I hope so.

From Abby's March 21 blog:

"Last night was a little exciting. The wind picked up to 25-30 knots with a large swell that unfortunately was on my beam. At about 2 in the morning, I was asleep down below when I woke up a little dazed, wondering how my dishes that were kept in the sink had made it all the way into my lap all the way across the cabin!"

I'd like to think that if I were going to sleep with large swells on the beam I'd have secured the dishes. But maybe not - I'm not good with dishes.

After delivering my daughter to a soccer practice one day at a makeshift field at her coaches house a few years back. I checked all three of my mirrors, threw it in reverse and immediately tagged the hood of a fellow team mates moms tiny sports car.

She had pulled in square behind me about a foot off my bumper...she was so low and so narrow compared to my 1 ton truck she was effectively invisible to my view.

Sometimes we look yet fail to see.........just saying.....mistakes happen..

Abby wouldn't be able to use that site (or any other AIS website) because they only cover boats near land-based AIS receivers. You'll notice there's no coverage within at least a thousand miles of where she is.
