Whoops, sorry.

You ever notice when Sara starts a new thread it goes to two pages in under 2 hours? I would say she has her hand and the pulse of the cruising community.

The difference between murders by gun is enormous :

I first said 10 times, more like 100 according to those data.

So what.

Dead is dead.

Heh. Another gun thread.

But I was looking at maps of the gulf mentioned too.

Re: A View On International Travel.

I love data:

http://www.cdc.gov/nchs/data/nvsr/nvsr59/nvsr59_04.pdf

Your chances of dying due to a homicide (all causes) is fraction of that of eating cheeseburgers (cardiovascular disease).

You are three times more likely to die from accidental exposure to a toxin, than a firearm in the US.

Four times more likely to die of renal failure.

About the same as Alcoholic liver disease (drink much?)

And while deaths due to firearms may be greater in the US than the UK, the homicide rate is lower. I would rather have the option of self protection.

The data suggest that you are about 3 times more likely to be murdered in the US, than in the UK.

5 vs. 1.6 per 100K.

Re: A View On International Travel.

The US data is reported crime. Is the UK data reported crimes or data based on convictions (or arrests)? Is that the "Detected" crime rate or the "Sanctioned" crime rate?

Re: A View On International Travel.

It's more than just being afraid to go to a country because of violence in some part of it. It even applies to going to a given city because you read of violence there.

Was in Cancun in Nov. People asked me afterward about violence because there had been shootings in the city. But that was no where near the area I went to. Could say the same about any major city, if you go to the crime areas you can expect a bigger chance of joining in the violence.

You're speaking of gun banishment, no? The States heavily control/regulate firearms, theoretically, but criminals don't follow laws/regulations.

That's not much of a handicap considering the fast-shrinking size/content of newspapers.

Yes, I meant a ban.

It's hard to imagine a situation where you can mail order an assault or sniper rifle to be "heavily controlled"

I believe it's the number of recorded deaths, ie corpses found!

Most Daily Mail readers have the same issue.

You can order it but it will not be delivered to you. You must pick it up at a licensed dealer, fill out the paperwork with proper ID and fingerprint etc. Plus a nice fee for the gvt.

And "Assault Rifle" is a misnomer. Widely used. Widely undefined. My plain old .22 you would not think of one but if I put a "military looking" stock and bi-pod on it you would call it an assault rifle. Same gun different "beholders" eye.

And any hunting (or not - NATO round is popular) long gun with a scope is a sniper rifle if used to snipe.
