Everyone cross their finger's and hope Astrid is OK! Looks like the center of the quake was just south of her. 7.7 is a big one. Here's hoping she and her boat come out undamaged.

Re: 7.7 Earthquake off BC! Tsunami Warning

This brings up an interesting question: How would you know about this when out cruising, esp. a sparsly populated area like the BC coast?

I think *most* people probably turn off their VHF at anchor, right? And even if you didn't I'm not sure it would work on much of that coast. Is there any sort of automated shortwave radio alarm channel/tone you could set up kinda like an emergency broadcast on the TV that would alert you, especially if you were sleeping?

Re VHF, usually yes. If I am in a remote/new area I generally leave it on. I'm also usually in transit but... for those who spend long periods of time at one spot, not likely the VHF is on. Good question.

Re: 7.7 Earthquake off BC! Tsunami Warning

SO I started thinking about this and figured there must be some sort of tornado warning device for the midwest and found this: http://www.midlandradio.com/Desktops...cificationsTab
Might be just the thing? Works on NOAA and environment Canada. Does anyone know if this might work elsewhere like in Europe?

Hi all. Just wanted to let you know I'm fine. Graham and Moresby Islands got rattled pretty good and a lot of people at the evac centers have stories of broken dishes and minor damage, but no injuries that I am aware of. The boat is ok too, as far as I know. There were some minor wave surges, but not bad.

I'm pleasantly surprised that such a big quake did such minor damage.
