Umm multihull.
The news article has a picture of the stranded catamaran after it's engine went poof.
My q is what about sails? Why couldn't they just move with sail power? Bad seas?

This guy was sailing alone to Scotland. Was awake for 4 days then got disoriented due to lack of sleep in heavy storm. Called for help. rescued.

Re: 5 americans rescued off Phillipines

The news article says the boat "had no EPIRB, HF radio, or satellite phone".

From the picture, it appears that it also had no boom or sails either!

IMHO, the article was mislabeled. Should have read, "Five Idiots Rescued Near Philippines."

I mean those three r basic comm sailmaker for most American sailors. SSB/HF is imp. So many merchant ships in the ocean man the network. Someone can relay ur urgent message.
EPIRB can safe u from a possible death.
The last item - sat phone, am not sure about. First of all it is costly. Second, many countries hv their reservations on bringing in sat phones in their waters. For instance, u might get into serious trouble if u enter Indian waters with a Portable SATPHONE. Security reasons.

Re: 5 americans rescued off Phillipines

The mast is still standing, and there is a jib on the trampoline. What am I missing here? Looking at the water there is obviously some wind there too!.........i2f

"Bullock however confirmed that the "Pineapple" had lost its rudder. The sail boat had been purchased by a buyer in Cebu, he said, and was being delivered to the buyer there."
