22 Hostages and a Ship rescued in Somali (yeah, another Pirate thread!)

Actually it's Puntland (the semi-autonomous region that makes the top corner of Somalia - Somaliland is the bit that wants full independence).

Puntland Forces Rescue 22 Hostages Who Had Been Held Captive For Nearly Three Years

Thought there would be a thread on this by now, but anyway just goes to show that the answer to Piracy is ashore and not afloat. In this case as the ship (and crew) had been captured for nearly 3 years pretty safe to say that no one was interested in paying any ransom - which might account for how hard the Pirates fought for it (by the report, not much if at all).

Nowhere to "store" a ship (and crew) along the coast means no sense in capturing one

Ah maybe because of the make up of the hostages nationality's no one intervened earlier?

The rescued crew members include eight Yemenis, five Indians, two Pakistanis, four Ghanaians, two Sudanese and a Filipino, Puntland Ports and Anti-piracy minister Saeed Mohamed Rage told The Associated Press.

Just a thought.

I think extremely likely that was the reason. Families no money, Shipping Company doesn't care and Govts don't give a sh#t.

The pharaohs sent great expeditions to Punt; they welcomed delegations of Puntites to their palaces, and their scribes recorded their gifts and ...

There once were some people from Punt,
In an anti-piratical stunt,
They saved 22 wankers,
Who'd been turned down by bankers,
But the pirates are back on the hunt.

If I remember the story correctly, the Puntlanders "army" "laid siege" to the vessel for a week. And yet somehow all eight pirates "escaped". At least someone bothered to rescue those guys. Another few years and maybe the Red Sea route will become an option again...
