Wiki Linking of Tags In Posts - Use or Disable

You may have noticed that locations and a few other words are being underlined in the text of posts. This is part of our new and evolving tagging system to help folks find and organize information quickly. Basically when a tag has been used several times it will automatically be highlighted as a topic of interest and by clicking on the highlighted text you will see more discussions on this same topic.

For example: If you make a post that includes the word Brazil, it will become a link to more member posted info about Brazil.

The feature can however, be disabled in your user cp if you prefer.

To opt out:

1. Click on 'User CP' on the upper nav bar.
2. From your profile page select 'Edit Options' from the left side menu (under settings & Options)
3. Scroll waaaay down to the Miscellaneous Options section and select 'No' under Tagging options.
4. Be sure to click the "save changes" button at the bottom of the page.

Janet, is it possible to construct a way for certain words to be overlooked by the automatic tagging feature? For example, I first noticed it was working this morning when "boat" and "sailing" were auto-tagged. Since there aren't too many posts that omit those words, members are going to quickly get tired of seeing them as links and just turn off the feature, probably, defeating it's usefulness.

Just a thought.

Tao,

We will be working on the ability to turn off linking of certain terms as you described. It won't be until next week when we can get that rolled out.

I'm finding it reduces readability without providing any heuristic value. It's distracting in posts where several words are highlighted. To be of value most searches require a phrase or selection of keywords. For instance, in one post referencing a weather service from Canada the word Canada was highlighted but a search on this provides no useful information on the topic. A search on the whole phrase might but then again I can copy and paste that into the search widget should I choose.

hummingway, We will be working to make the system work better in the months ahead. We turned it on so we could see the results and will now work on refining them to be more useful. Please note that we created the opt-out option as described in post #1 of this thread for members like yourself who would rather browse the forums with the links turned off.

Thanks, I have done so but should you change the functionality I hope you'll post the changes in this thread and I'll be happy to try it again.
