Where can we post interface ideas for CF

I can't be somewhere, even on a saiboat, without "list of changes"... :-)
Where can I make some propositions to CF managers about thread interface ?

Re: Where can we post interface ideas for CF

My 5 cents...

As I have a 1900x1200 screen, I don't know the consequences for others, but in Threaded Mode I am always needing to scroll when the message is long, with a picture or with a long quote... scroll down to read it to the end, scroll up to return to the thread list, scroll the thread list ... it is quite a job.

As the screens are mostly horizontal, why not to put side by side the thread list and the messages ? The thread list can be quite narrow but long on the left and the message as large as the rest of the screen minus the commercial zone allow.

Each will have much longer vertical place to have a big number of thread list items and mostly the full message on the right... or center because the commercial zobe on the right.

In an other life I was interface designer ....:-)

Thanks for the suggestions. It's always good to hear about board use. Layout is always a challenge as we have folks on mobile devices, tablets, laptops and a variety of screen resolutions.

It's interesting that you use the threaded view - few folks do.
You might try switching to linear - newest first and see how you like it. Since the software remembers the last post you read, a thread with new content should open to the point where there is an unread post, bypassing the need for so much scrolling.

Thank you for your reply ... you should work as a "communicator for politician"

If FEW FOLKS use what I consider the best way to rapidly read the forum... the TREADED VIEW ...

because we can see to WHICH person the reply is addressed withtout having a quote (which in my mind ADD LOT OF UNUSEFULL INFO if we know to who it is addressed) and save screen space for important info and also on your server :-) ...

...this is EXACTLY because this interface is not properly used. It is not user friendly. Make a 4th view option, at least for the large screen user and you will be surprized. The others with iphone or tablet, just have to forget it.

An other point : Usually on sites with Google commercials if we have paid the suscription, the adds are removed. I have no problem with those on the right side... but the one between the header and the acces to forum threads is very "in the way" and force to scroll al the time.

I understand you make revenues with Google and if I don't pay ... no problem ... but if I pay... HUM what is the advantage ?

============

Janet, Is there a url format which will open a sub-thread at the most recent post?
Everything I've tried seems to open to a particular page in a thread, and for popular threads that page becomes old quickly.

I would like to save users several keystrokes, particularly when they have slow inet (while sailing).

Thanks

Re: Where can we post interface ideas for CF

How/where threads open is entirely dependent on an individual users settings.

These can be changed here: https://www.cruisersforum.com/forums...do=editoptions. scroll down to the last section (thread display options).

You can however use the url of an individual post if you want to link directly to it. You can find the url of a post by clicking on the post number in the top right corner of a post.

Re: Where can we post interface ideas for CF

Dear Janet H,
That is helpful, and familiar.

Quote:
Thread Display Mode:Here you can choose the display mode for threads. For a full explanation of the modes, please view this help page.
"Linear Newest First"
If user has selected "Linear Newest First"

How would I craft a URL link to a thread that would allow the thread to go to the newest post for this type of user?
I would NOT like to specify a particular post, just the thread.
Perhaps there is some wildcard designation or something before the .html?

Re: Where can we post interface ideas for CF

The thread will open to the newest post that the member hasn't seen if they click on the thread url. If a member is logged in this is how the forum software works. It remembers what you have already seen and shows you the next new content on a thread - automatically. No special url is needed.

Re: Where can we post interface ideas for CF

Yes, that would be an ideal action for a [[Link]], but when I try to create one, a post or page is added at the end, so it becomes specific to direct to that post/page.

For example:
  1. I click on the OpenCPN > Fugawi Charts Plugin and I get the URL below in my browser url address and the most current page opens.http://www.cruisersforum.com/forums/...or-145073.html
  2. Next if I use that URL in a link like this one then if additional pages have been made when I click this link, the url opened it that same exact page, not the newest page. It is as if I put into the url one of the earlier pages like http://www.cruisersforum.com/forums/...-145073-3.html in the link, it will just go to that page, not the newest.
  3. What I am asking about is how I create a Link (url) that will take a user who has selected "Linear Newest First" to the newest page. I am thinking that it should be similar to the background actions when a user clicks on a thread, just before the page number is added.

Re: Where can we post interface ideas for CF

Another Example:
Weather_routing Plugin for Opencpn

Code:
Newest Page: ruisersforum.com/forums/f134/weather-routing-100060.html"
Page 2 Older: ruisersforum.com/forums/f134/weather-routing-100060-2.html
Page 3 Older: ruisersforum.com/forums/f134/weather-routing-100060-3.html
Page 4 Older: ruisersforum.com/forums/f134/weather-routing-100060-4.html
Page 5 Older: ruisersforum.com/forums/f134/weather-routing-100060-5.html
Newest Page: http://www.cruisersforum.com/forums/f134/weather-routing-100060.html"
Page 2 Older: http://www.cruisersforum.com/forums/...-100060-2.html
Page 3 Older: http://www.cruisersforum.com/forums/...-100060-3.html
Page 4 Older: http://www.cruisersforum.com/forums/...-100060-4.html
Page 5 Older: http://www.cruisersforum.com/forums/...-100060-5.html
and so on.

What happens when a new page is added? Do they all increment by one?
If so, that is my answer, I think.

So I would just have to use for the link, the URL

Code:
ruisersforum.com/forums/f134/weather-routing-100060.html
for the link, and that would indeed always go to the newest page, provided the user has selected Newest first.

Is this correct?

Re: Where can we post interface ideas for CF

What you are proposing is not possible. The reason is that each member sees something different. Since members can change settings to alter the post order display as well as how many posts the see per page of a single thread, my page 1 may not be your page 1.

You can link to a thread or to a specific post only. Members will see the most recent post on a thread that that have not already read unless you include a link to a specific post.
