Tips and tricks for searching this forum

Can anyone give me guidance or tell me where to look for search tips.

Example given:
I want to search for "Balance 451 catamaran"

If I put those words into the search line I get every post that refers to "Balance" anywhere in the thread. This could be balance the sailplan or balance my beer. Do I put quotes around the phrase, use "and" inbetween words, etc.

General search tips and instructions would really help.

You can either go to "advanced search" enter in quotes "balance 451" or go to the custom Google search, and enter it.

In both cases you get the same result. In this case, I tried it with "catamaran" added, and got no results, so just drop that part.

Quotation marks around the entire phrase gets you the exact phrase. AND works too. This is simple Booleean (sp?) searches. Google it, it will explain how for all search engines.

The built-in search is lousy on any vBulletin based forum.

Instead I always just use Google directly, with a site: prefix referencing the particular forum. For your example, type into a Google search bar

site:www.cruisersforum.com Balance 451 catamaran

There is a custom Google search - there is a link in my signature - that only searches CF.

Use quotes around the key phrase and try it.

<edit> I tried a few variations - it appears the the phrase has not been used before.

Here is a search results for the WWW. Only 3 pages of hits. Not a popular topic, I'm afraid...
