Single handing along the coast or island hopping short distances is fine. I was singlehanded in this respect for many years, on both of my first two boats. To do so "over night, for days", leaving no one at the helm for hours on end, is both illegal and irresponsible!

It is required that ALL vessels keep watch at all times. I don't want the entire responsibility of avoiding collision at sea on my shoulders, because the other vessel has no one on watch.

If CF will not take a stand on this irresponsible practice, PLEASE don't encourage it by setting up an entire sub forum on the dangerous & illegal practice...

If you would pass this on to the others that are considering this I would appreciate it, so would the other sailors that take their responsibility seriously. Singlehanding "with no one on watch", is illegal for good reason!

Singlehanding is not illegal...
having no one on watch is not illegal either... though sometimes very stupid if in places like the shipping lanes in the English Channel...
but the chances of colliding with another singlehander are in the millions to one...
However I can assure you that being rammed by a 'Crewed' boat with no one on deck is a very real and present danger... sometimes even if they are on deck...
real life first hand experience.
There are more idiots on crewed boats than you'll ever find among solo sailors...

People will single hand, whether we think it is right to do so or not, and I therefore feel the issues should be addressed. Fortunately, there are very good radar systems complete with alarms now, to help improve safety - and these issues should be discussed.

I don't know how this got into a discussion about the legality of standing watch or not, but as I interprated the OP, a sub-forum where discussions of how to set-up a vessel for single-handing, how to sail without crew to do half the work, and other such subjects, would be welcome by me as right now I'm trying to learn how to be a single-hander on inland lakes. If, and when I get to the point where I own an ocean going vessel, I would take a hard look at water sailing">blue water sailing by myself.

I don't think I'm that brave.

Well, I for one would appreciate a dedicated single handed forum, because I want to learn from those more experienced at it than me, for my safety and everyone else's. Twelve months ago I was on a sailing school vessel at night off the NSW coast. As I came on watch and stuck my head out the companionway still rubbing sleep out of my eyes, I noticed a fishing boat not 500m off our starboard bow. The instructor and the 2 crew on deck hadn't seen it. The realists among us know that this is so common and my experience is that the singlehanders have assessed the risks and often take far more appropriate defensive action than the skippers of some crewed boats who assume that having people on deck fullfills their responsibility. Lets have a singlehanded forum so that those of us who have to do it now and again can learn from each other.

The question in my mind is how many actual subjects are unique to singlehanding? There are issues like standing watch, sail handling and perhaps some psychological issues but if we're only talking a few threads it hardly warrants a subforum.

So, I think this forum has to many sub-divisions already. At times I want to post something new and find it hard to decide where it should go or else I cannot find an appropriate sub-.

What I like a lot is posting and sorting by tags. Then a search can be used to search for key words in tags, titles, text, etc.. I find this practical and coherent with other places on the web.

In the absence of a sub forum for single handing, think of your titles as tags (I know they're NOT tags, but....) since title words are what show up in searches. Therefore, searching for 'single' should show any threads with the word 'single' in the title.

The search function and your title would work better if I knew how to search. I can't seem to get the Boolean functions to tie words together. For example:

If I were to search for "Bow Lines", I would get every post about bow hunting, dogs barking, how to tie a bow tie, pickup lines to use at the pub, rail lines that service Miami, and parallel lines on a chart. No search result would be found for what size line to tie off the bow of a 40' Whoopeecraft.

Also, would "singlehanded" be one word or two? Single handed. C'mom schoolmarm.

Don't use the lame search feature that comes with the forum software. Use the custom, CF-specific search feature that you can find in the "Search" pull-down menu near the top righthand part of the page.
