Request to Improve the Addition of Web Content

At the moment the "Add Hyperlink" option just offers to add such (with unnecessary quotes) with a title identical to the link itself. Could there be an option to add a title of choice (rather than having to do it manually).

Could there also be added a web content image option. This could be stand alone or incorporated with an advanced hyperlink option - e.g.

As you can see this provides clickable thumbnail which pulls up link, a much neater solution than present, which would smarten up posts no end.

Merged the two threads and moved to tech support.

Do you mean adding a URL with you own custom name etc?

Just do [ url=http://yourURL.com]Your text[ /url]
Without the spaces.
I hope that is what you were asking.

I think Richard would like a second box on the hyperlink pop up that allows the user to title the link.

My work around is to type the title text in my message, highlight it and then hit the hyperlink icon. The hyperlink will be applied to the highlighted text.

As for the web content, that one will need a techie comment.

Yes but also:

[URL=http://<link>][IMG]http://<matching clickable image link>[ /IMG][ /URL] - without the spaces else it gets executed

This is the html used in my examples above.

Richard,

Are you using advanced edit?

When I do a hyperlink, after pasting in the URL, the text (with BB code URL and then description same as URL) shows in the edit box, with the description portion already highlighted. If I start typing, the description is replaced by what I type.

dacust - the best page on the internets

If I just leave the text as it was, if the page has a title, the BB replaces the URL with the page title.

DACUST

Of course, this only addresses the part where you want to easily enter in your own title...

Yes I know there are ways around the custom hyperlink text issue but I guess I was asking that the hyperlink dialogue be changed so that there was a space to enter link & another to enter text, to benefit everyone not just those with html skills.

MS offer this in Outlook as do some other forums. At the moment the default solution IMO is ugly. It also adds unnecessary quotes around the url.

Adding the image option would be icing on the cake.

Richard & Dan,

I think my way is easier -

This is the highlighted text

Done...

No html tags are needed at all.

1. Type text
2. Highlight text
3. Insert url in dialog box

OK I can see this discussion hitting a wall

Can I ask therefore that we have an extra hyperlink option for image controlled link.

Dialogue box asking for link itself & link to clickable image that pulls up first link, providing html control as indicated in posts above.

Richard - html use has been limited deliberately as a security measure for the board. People can mess up board layout, hijack visitors using javascript, make the site appear different, etc using html so aside from the advanced editor and tags you may not have as many options as you would like. On a board as public as Cruisers, this is the compromise we have to make.

Sorry Janet - I think you misunderstand what I was asking for. Simply to streamline something that I can do manually anyway as shown in examples above. It might even improve security as you can decide what html to implement.

This would make it much easier for the average member to make his/her postings far more understandable without, IMO displaying long & ugly links.

Richard,

Thanks for the feedback. Unfortunately I don't think we will change the system at this time as it would take some code changes which can create a maintenance issue when upgrading the software.

As you know, you can currently make images hyperlinks. To do so, just click the image icon and add the image and then click on the image and click on the hyperlink icon. That's 2 more clicks then what you are suggesting but it allows us to keep software changes to a minimum which helps keep the site easy to upgrade which in-turn helps keep our community secure.

Thanks again for the feedback and I will keep a note of this in case we can implement it down the road.

Thanks Andy,

It seems all that is really missing is a single dialogue option to add hyperlink with image rather than text tag. This would display clickable image which pulls up chosen hyperlink.

I know you can do this manually but most don't know how.

IMHO this would encourage much neater posts given "a picture is worth a thousand words".
