Redirect ad pop ups

About 80% of the time I come here on my phone I get redirected to some crappy “CONGRATULATIONS!” Ad.

Please review your ad server and fix this. It is ruining the site for mobile users.

Re: Redirect ad pop ups

Search google on this and you will find it’s not in the severs but instead something bad on your device. Follow some of the online instructions for your device and it likely will go away...

Re: Redirect ad pop ups

I frequent another website using this exact softwade and it never happens. But here... all. The. Time.

From what i’ve Read it’s the ads. Do you have a link that blames devices?

https://www.wired.com/story/pop-up-m...-to-stop-them/

I followed some advice to clear safari data, we’ll see if that helps. Plenty of people saying it has happened on brand new phones though. Hrm.

Re: Redirect ad pop ups

You likely did this, but searching “congratulations you won” and lots of articles appear - not all trustworthy of course... but many discuss browser/adware as the cause.

I use this site nearly every day on many devices and do not get the problem, but I did have it in the past (on a different site, WUnderground.com only) and was able to get rid of it (in my case It was only on my iPhone and went away when I upgraded iOS after trying other recommendations unsuccessfully). Could mean the browser just got smarter at blocking the server issue (instead of it being a client side infection) - but either way it’s gone which is all I cared about!

Good luck...!

Re: Redirect ad pop ups

Hi, hoosierdoc,

I only use my computer here, so i don't know if this applies to smartphones or not, but I use adblockplus on the computer, and it does a fine job.

Re: Redirect ad pop ups

No to hijack the thread too badly, but...

I personally hate ads and pop ups. It sounds like something isn't right if you're getting a lot of them from this site.

Having said that, ads help pay for keeping the site free for everyone. Admins have to pay for all this (and their time?) somehow. Even so, I installed pop up blocker and I don't get any pop ups.

Then I turned around and paid $15 for an upgraded account here on Cruiser Forums. That's a few beers or a fancy glass of wine for you fancy yachties.

So if it's ad revenue or people who chip in, one way or the other, things gotta get paid for.

p.s. re cellphones, I don't get any pop ups nor do I don't know if there's a way to install ad blocker on a cellphone.

Re: Redirect ad pop ups

The problem with this one is you cannot evade it. You are forced to completely close the page and are unable to continue reading. It is a scam, not a real ad.

Re: Redirect ad pop ups

I’ve been having the same problem with this website and Trawler Forum.

I’ve cleared the browser history and cookies several times. That seems to help for awhile but the problem returns.

These are not regular ads. They hijack your device and try to trick you into answering questions. You can’t just close them. You have to close the page and lose whatever you were doing.

I haven’t tried logging on with my desk top computer. This happens on my iPad.

I only have the problem with Cruisers and Trawler forums.

Re: Redirect ad pop ups

These are ad related and once your device is cookied up by that company they will be displayed. The solution is to delete cache and cookies and do a restart. It will fix the issue temporarily. Once they start again, you will need to repeat. IOS is especially vulnerable it seems...

I get this one every time I open CF, it would be nice if it didn't.

I have the same experience with these two forums. The only remedy I found other than using the dedicated app is to disable Java Script in Safari. Unfortunately, it limits browser functionality somewhat.

Re: Redirect ad pop ups

I have the same issues with pop ups which freeze my devices, iPad and iPhone. This happens only on the cruisers forum site and sailnet site, It's definitely the sites where my devices pick up the unwanted adware, I wish the site tech people would fix the problem. Theres been several threads on the issue, but nothing done about it. I started another thread on the subject a few months back.

The only fix that works temporarily is using the Firefox browser instead of Safari. But if a thread subscription gets into my email, my device then goes through my regular browser which is safari to access google, then the adds reappear.... BUT ONLY ON THE CRUISERS FORUM SITE!!! I really wish the forum owners would try their own site using an apple device to understand firsthand just how irritating this can be. There's some kind of add worm which comes off this site and freezes our devices.

Re: Redirect ad pop ups

I don't mind the benign banner ads so much, but any type of pop-up or something I have to close, move or silence I make a point of NEVER buying anything from them, and if they have any contact info, I send them an e-mail letting them know that.
