Prop size and pitch

I am new to boating with only 1 year on the water (all river) and I have now taken my boat out of the water. The boat is a 25ft cruiser and I have just removed the prop due to extensive damage.

I am wondering can I get some advice as to the pitch required for river cruising on a 14 inch prop. I am not sure of the current pitch but know there is a wide variety on the 14inch.

The boat has an enfield sterndrive and perkins 4107 diesel engine.

Thanks

Re: Prop size and pitch

Your current prop's diameter and pitch should be stamped on the hub. It'll look like this 14 X 20

To know what prop to replace that one with, you need to ask a propeller manufacturer, for example Homepage // Michigan Wheel Marine Or else your boat manufacturer.

Re: Prop size and pitch

try this link which might help, but you will be a bit limited as I belive 14' is the largest size prop that will fit on the enfield sterndrive.

Vicprop - Propeller Calculator

also this link with downloadable pdf for the full range of props for enfields.

Re: Prop size and pitch

You should prop your boat so that your Perkins can achieve max rpm & no more. The general rule is 1 inch of pitch equals 100 rpm. If max rpm for your Perkins is 3000 & you can only get 2800 you need 2 less inches of pitch. Some people think over propping is a good idea because you can get the same speed at lower rpms but it is harder on the motor & should be avoided.
