Political Advertisements on the Forum

I understand that the forum costs are paid by advertisements and publicity.
Nothing wrong with that.
But too much of them are political...
Is there a way to avoid this so that this forum can stay a-political?

Re: Political Advertisements On the Forum

Huh? One of the reasons I like this forum so much is the lack of political posts. They can be argumentative and since most polls are around 50/50 no good can come of it. I have noticed that political threads, if started, will soon be closed. Since folks are split about 50/50 then it appears that most any negative political thread will wind up being an argument and we all know that we can't do that. (Read the rules). I can talk politics with a level head because I just don't care but many are much more passionate about their beliefs.

I'm sure someone will correct me if I'm wrong ........but I don't think so. Maybe you were joking? Peace/love and happiness, brother.

Re: Political Advertisements On the Forum

haven't seen a political ad yet. I think the ads are based on your search cookies. I searched for a perkins part, and the next day, all the CF ads were for perkins parts.

Re: Political Advertisements On the Forum

I know the ads that I see seem to directly relate to what I have googled. Now I see ads for Autotask (a direct search by me) and also a Kinect game that I looked up. Not sure if that's always how it happens.

Re: Political Advertisements On the Forum

I have not seen a single political ad myself. What I have seen lately are adds for Progressive Car Insurance using the same annoying character that is non stop on every channel on TV.

But for free access to Cruisers Forum it's not hard to look the other way.

Re: Political Advertisements On the Forum

This question, or a variant of it, comes up here from time to time. Here's a post made some time ago by Andy R, the owner of CF, in answer to a similar question.
Quote:
I just wanted to chime in regarding the ads. Forums are generally very high page view sites with very low click through rates. That means they are expensive to run and generate less income then most sites. Cruisers Forum is part of some ad networks that automate the ad serving that offsets the cost to keep the site running. I have little control over the ads. Please understand that in the tough economic times it's important for Cruisers Forum to stay afloat. Thanks for your understanding!

Re: Political Advertisements On the Forum

there are ads that surround the forum page, like the banner at the top, and the banners on the right side, and then there are forum posts. Which are we talking about??

I have never seen a "political ad" in the body of a post. Are you saying that you are seeing these things in a the text of a post? Wow...

I thought I was precise. I repeat: I'm NOT talking about posts. I'm talking about PUBLICITY on the page.

And yes I understand about costs etc but I would like to know if the Forum can avoid ads and publicity of a political character (political fund raising, appeal to political petitions etc as I have seen on those pages several times)
That's all. No more no less.

Re: Political Advertisements On the Forum

Before I had adblock I saw lots of ads, but never political that I can remember.

I highly recommend adblock.

And the short answer is no, we have no control over what ads your browser pulls up in response to google ads.

Re: Political Advertisements On the Forum

The Google based Ads are (usually) generated according to your personal browsing history and internet habbits. (google knows everything about you!).

We don't all see the same ads all the time.

So if you are seeing ads you don't approve of, you should take a look at your own internet usage and/or practice safer browsing.

That is exactly what is happening. Google knows what you search for. Google AdSense will show you advertising relating to what you search for. When you click through web sites with advertising (via your Google search or not), advertising providers keep track of the sites you visit and do the same. The thinking is that you are more likely to click on an ad that you are interested in or have previously clicked. Nearly all of the advertising I see is technology related, as that's what I do and what I search for.

Web sites displaying Google AdSense advertising (like CF) have the option to block specific categories of advertising. Similarly, Google AdSense publishers also have the ability to allow only specific types of advertising. In cases where Google runs out of paying ads to show, they will serve free "public service advertising", which is non-profits and (yep, you guessed it) political advertising.
