Oversized Photos In Posts

Dear Members,

please, be so kind and take some care to not insert into Your posts oversized photos. You can always include them as an attachements.
Inserting the huge photos into the posts make scrolling through the thread unconvenient and unnerving sometime.
Please, show some consideration

Cheers,

Tomasz

Yep, it resizes them for display after downloading the full image file. That's fine if you are on a fast, cheap broadband link. It's a PITA if you are on a slow, expensive datalink as many of us are.

Re: Oversized Photos In Posts

Just a few resources for those who may not be used to resizing images:

Some free online resizers (I haven't used them, recommended in a photography forum):

Resize Images Online at ResizePic
Online Image Resizer - Resize digital photo, images or pictures online!
Resize Pictures Online for Free - Crop Photos Too!
Free Online Picture Resizer - Crop and Resize photos, images, or pictures online for FREE!

If you use a Mac, Iphoto will resize images.

GIMP is a fairly advanced free photo editing software, if you are looking for more advanced features, but don't want to pay for photoshop.

Article here about resizing images. It talks specifically about using photoshop, but the resizing principles apply regardless of resizing software used.

Digital Photography - Picture Size, Resolution and Format for Online Viewing

Re: Oversized Photos In Posts

Wow, I was just complaining about this. It seems like recently everyone is posting gigantic photos all of a sudden. Yes, my browser resizes them, but I pay for that through both the price of the data I am being charged for and the excruciating time it takes to load them before resizing.

I would be happy if CF set up filters for size of posted photos in the upload process.

For Windows users, Irfanview is hard to beat for easy resizing images for the web. Just view the image, crop it if you want and then select "File | Save for web...".

It's also great as your default image viewer and general image manipulator.

Re: Oversized Photos In Posts

It's surprising that a website dedicated to cruising does not have systems in place to make it easier for those reliant on slow and expensive broadband.

Resizing your own photos is obviously an option for those who care about file size, but I would like to see tighter limits on the amount of data in posts, and encourage the use of links.

For the record, I am limited to mobile broadband, and I have to buy more data allowance when I go over the limit, which I do every month.

Untick "Show Images (including attached images and images in [IMG] code)"

You just see the link, frequently showing the file size, and can decide whether you want to view it or not.

Generally I don't look at the images when I see someone has posted half a dozen of them all over 400KB in size unless I am particularly interested in the topic.

Also look at the following options on that page:

Images wider than this width will be resized. Enter 0 to allow all widths, or leave the field empty to use the default value of 520. Images taller than this height will be resized. Enter 0 to allow all heights, or leave the field empty to use the default value of 0.

Thanks StuM

I had not looked at preferences since moving off home broadband. I have now changed the settings that limit the display size, as I prefer to see images embedded. If this means less downloaded data, then it will be a good compromise. If I need to economise further I will try not displaying them at all.

You can also change from Wysiwig to textual but I have no idea what it would look like...
