Magazine poll

The recent thread on the L&A forum has generated some useful commentary on the periodicals that we read. With that in mind lets run a poll on what the forum members are reading. This could be particularly helpful to the new members who are looking for places to start reading and the rest of us who might find something fresh to read after the day's sail.

Below is a list of my favorite reads in order of how much I look forward to seeing them in the mail. Please add to it and include if it is regional, published by a club (i.e. Mainsheet) and country it is published in. Once we have a list we'll put together a poll. Any other ideas about what the poll should include are welcome. pv

Good Old Boat - US
Practical Sailor - US
Tell Tails - Regional Texas (you never know when your boat may show up in print!)

I subscribe to Boatworks and Good Old Boat. They don't come out monthly but are good reading.

I had several but now I just hang out on Crusers Forum. The rent is cheap and the crowd is nautical most of the time. The writing isn't always great but there is a lot of it.

I used to read the "glossies" and practical sailor. Sail and Cruising World started to repeat their informational articles using different sources but the same subjects. Practical Sailor is very expensive and I found they were reviewing things which had nothing to do with practical so I let my subscription lapse. I think P.S. does a fine job of reviewing/testing things and gives an honest opinion. They lost me when they started reviewing sunglasses.

I will. I would to get a longer list of periodicals to include. From my computer I can see old copies of Blue Water Sailing, Practical Navigator, Latts & Atts, and Sailing. I would like to give it a couple of days to let some members from out of the country list some of their favorites.

There has already been a couple of titles listed I had not heard of or forgotten about.

I gotta agree with you here, i wasnt planning on renewing this year, it's hard to grant 20 a year on 7 issues. Other then that i usually pre-scout issues of various mags in the local west marine and buy them if they have something that interests me, otherwise screw it.

I am not biased but.....

My own is my favourite and it is free to pick up in Australia and free to download off the web. I am especially satisfied with the latest edition, # 20. If you want a copy it is a PDF of a 24 page newspaper. the file size is about 1.5 meg. (lotsa photos) see http://thecoastalpassage.com/recent_issues.html

Of the rest, my vote is Good Old Boat. Not because it is like mine but I repsect how it is done. It has the best tech articles and a feel of integrity... I don't expect reviews on the latest pair of $200 sun glass's!

Karen has been kind enough to share a few articles with TCP.

Cheers

All, I'll start putting together the poll together in the next couple of days. If you want a specific magazine listed that has not been mentioned please post now. Thanks
