IP Numbers of Posters ?

I assume that vBulletin records the IP numbers of posters.

My question is if it is possible to display that number ? I am pretty sure that I have been on another vBulletin site where you could mouse over the label IP attached to every post and it would show the originating IP.

Maybe it is already there and I've just missed it ?

Thanks,

-Sven

IP addresses aren't displayed for privacy reasons. IP addresses may be tracked to physical locations, reveal info about service providers, etc. We take member privacy seriously and don't sell it or share it.

Thanks Janet.

While IP numbers are not much of a privacy concern unless you have a static IP (like I do) I appreciate the sentiment and totally agree with the general philosophy of protecting privacy. I could go on for quite a while about the evils of privacy breaches, but I won't.

The downside of not displaying IP numbers is that it makes sock-puppeteering almost impossible to prevent.

Appreciate the answer.

Except that the "sock puppets" IPs are not invisible to the Admins and moderators, Sven. It isn't too difficult for us to figure out when someone is doing that, and we deal with it.

If you have a problem with a particular post, click on the Report Post icon in the lower left of every post (white triangle, red border, black exclamation mark). This brings a post to our immediate attention, and you can type into the box provided the reason you're reporting the post.

Thanks Tao (or is TaoJones preferred ?),

I'd hate to malign someone, even privately, when all I have is a suspicion. As you say, if it becomes obvious you mods will probably see it.

Thanks again,

-Sven

What I think is funny is when the spammers use a time zone that is out in the middle of the Pacific Ocean.

We have some pretty internet savvy investigators on the mod team who have unearthed quite a number of relatively deceptive things that people have tried.
