Oh come on, do you really feel that they are that bad? How many times do we hear about beating the dead horse on guns or mono vs. multi?
I could maybe understand if one of the emoticons was a finger, but then I don't upset about such things.

Politeness may be PC, but it can always stand upon it’s own merits.
Our CF is noted for it’s politeness, amongst other things.

It's also noted for spirited banter, debate and the exchange of ideas along with friendly (usually) conversation and support. We're generally unable to convey tone while typing and thus the aptly named emoticons help to clarify the intent of a post.

And what intent does one associate with rolling eyes or whistling, for instance?
In most cases, I'd think the intent would not be allowed, on this Forum, if stated in words.

It's all about context. The emoticons aid in conveying intent. If an individual were to use them in a degrading or insulting manner, I'd expect the Mods to act appropriately. That's what they're here for.

Well, that's one of the things we're here for, Dave. And it's impossible for us to read every single word of every post or to gauge the intent behind every use of an emoticon, so we rely a great deal on members using the Report Post icon to bring potential problems to our attention.
Carry on . . .
