How do ads and purchases work?

Is there any particular rule, as far as purchasing from the classifieds,

that helps to protect the seller and the buyer? Are the sales based
solely on an honor system?

I checked the general rules but could not find any specific information
regrading the above.

Very much buyer and seller beware. If it's even slightly local then drive down and view first.
