Extending Home Page Portal

Can i suggest an extension of the home page portal.(extra page etc)

As this site becomes more popular I find the "portal page" fills up much quicker than normal.
I am based in Australia and there are a number of Australian and New Zealands on this site.
I find that in the last couple of months any new post made (because of the time differance) disappears from the "portal" before USA/Canadian members have a chance to see it.

I have received a lot of very good advise from this forum over the years in regard to boating issues but when I do post a query it is nice a to get as many different points of view as possible.
Just a suggestion.
regards,
beau

We have some other options that may work for you. If you click on the "new posts" link you should see a list of all the threads that have been updated since your last visit (that you havent already seen).

You can also click on todays posts under quick links for a similar list.

Dear Janet,
Thank you for your suggestion, but that does not solve the issue.

Most members go into the Portal to see what is new on that day. If a post is already off the page because it was placed early in the day and has been superceded by new posts later that day, they wont see the earlier post unless they specifically look for it or go into the relative catagory.

The simple answer would be to extend the length/size of the portal page.

Seriously, the New Post link will list all the posts made since the last time you logged onto the site.

Try it. I once suggested the same thing you have and someone pointed me to New Posts. Problem solved.

Except that it isn't Beau who needs to click on New Posts, it's all the readers from the distant time zones who may only scan the Home Page Portal. Because the board moves so quickly, now, many posts can cycle through the Home Page Portal in less than an hour. If no one posts to the thread while it's on the Home Page Portal, and later readers don't think to use the New Posts link, they will have effectively missed it (unless, as beau indicated, they scan the individual forums.

The question is - how do you re-train old sailors to use the New Posts function?

I use the "unread" posts button. I get several pages when I log on after an overnight and the good part is that if I have read a post and it is a "today's" post it no longer shows up because it is already read.

The other tool I use a lot is the user CP. Any thread you have posted in or subscribed to is in this "personal" list. Interestingly a thread that has had no activity for months can pop up in this list if someone posts something new.

If I get bored with a thread that I am subscribed to I can also unsubscribe from this screen. How the forum treats the subscriptions (email notification, autosubscribe, etc.) can be modified from the user CP under the options selection.
