...source of extra energy, such as sail power, so you can pump energy into your batteries via the propeller driving your generator/alternator

The same dimensions as Watt hours, BTUs or calories.

It's the energy produced by 1 Horse Power in 1 hr.

It's useful if you are working with an engine rated in HP.

As an example, an approximation for fuel consumption of a diesel engine is 0.225 litres per hour per horsepower.

If I run one of my 40 HP Yanmars at 2800 RPM, I know it is generating about 16 HP *. If I run it for 1 hour. that's 16 HP hours which equates to 16 x 0.225 = 3.6 litres of diesel consumed.

If I run it for 2 hours, that 32 HP hours = 7.2 litres.

* based on HP = Max HP x cube root of (RPM/Max RPM)

You guys interested in electric and hybrid power for boats might want to plan a trip to Fort Lauderdale in January to visit the Electric and Hybrid Marine World Expo.

Re: EP retrofit /self engineering

Others have cleared up your initial math errors.

I'll spare you the engineering propellor hat deep dive. Others have given you some great feedback.

It is tough to beat the energy density of diesel. Batteries don't even get close.

If your use case was to get in and out of a marina then you might be in with a chance. Dont expect diesel like range at full power. There is little enough space on a boat as it is to attempt to fill it with enough batteries.

You've bought an alternator. However high electric power control is not cheap or simple. I cant see how you'll end up spending less than a diesel replacement / rebuild.

There is a reason electric powered vessels aren't common. The economics dont stack up.
