Re: Down loading charts for garmin
The specific plotter is important.
Wouldn't Garmin | United States | Home would be a good place to start?

Re: Down loading charts for garmin
Yes I can download from Garmin, but the cost is still the same. I am looking for a less expensive avenue to go!

a less expensive ?????????????
might not be possible...
Unless bootlegged, Garmin has been known to be pretty "strict" with linking the chartplotter or even hh GPSs with "authorized" accounts.
If you find one, keep it to yourself, kinda like a great ski area with no crowds.
Unless...could Google help?

Re: Down loading charts for garmin
I am still getting them for free as part of an update warranty issue. However, I have seen cracks for this that come and go as Garmin goes after them, Back to the uncrowded ski slope reference. The gotcha is that if the crack doesnt work, supposedly the Garmin can tell and rats you out with a service needed message. Some people have made it work. It like the Dirty Harry line: DO you feel lucky?

You can sometimes find retailer who will discount the chart chips.
Other than that, you seem to be looking for illegal "bootleg" charts. The price you pay for Garmin charts is the price of "intellectual property". In other words, Garmin is trying to recoup the money they paid people to create the charts in the first place.
Garmin (and most other software companies) employs some copy protection schemes to try to prevent people from buying a chart and then selling copies. You can hunt around on ebay or craigs list but just beware that what you get may not work or may be inaccurate. And it's dishonest.

Re: Down loading charts for garmin
I found a retailer on Ebay that sells charts out of Canada cheap, other than that, nothing.

Re: Down loading charts for garmin
Here's the alternative:
Get OpenCP for your laptop, use Babel to transfer stuff. Open is free.
I use the handheld Garmin for using local buoys as waypoints and do planning on a bigger screen and/or charts.
