Courtesy on replies?

Since I'm new to this forum and I just posted my new thread I have a question regarding what is the courtesy when you replies to the replies. I got so many replies. Love it!
Do you comment individual on every reply or do you just reply to the thread, to all. Or maybe both?

It depends

Don't comment on every reply just to say "thanks". Unless you have a specific comment to make on a specific post, then a general "thanks for all your replies" is fine.

One other point; you ask about "replies," but there are also "notifications."

You get an e-mail notification when someone posts a reply on a thread you "subscribed" to.

By default, you are automatically subscribed to any thread you start, or post to. Over time, this can get tedious. Luckily, there's an option called "Default Thread Subscription Mode."

Go to the "User CP" or "Quick Links" menu option and select "Edit Options" to change this. While you're there, check out the other options available.

In your User CP, you can see a list of threads you're subscribed to, and unsubscribe any. While reading a thread, there's also an "unsubscribe" option right on the menu.

OTOH if the reply is stupid, feel free to start with "Jane, you ignorant slut..."

Pollux, you are supposed to send out formal written acknowledgements to every reply, whether it was particularly helpful or not. If the reply was actually of value to you, then an appropriate gift is also in order. If you have merch for your boat, then a t-shirt, hoodie, or watch cap is usually the minimum gift. If the reply was a big cost-saver, than something like FLIR nightvision binoculars (order from West Marine or others) might be in order.

But yes, always, a formal reply is in order. And hand-written in a neat cursive script, on a proper cotton stationery stock, none of that cheap computer-generated stuff on the copier paper.

Courtesy is always the best. While even I chuckle at "Jane, you ignorant slut...", we also need to remind our self's that CF is a worldwide forum and many folks from all over the world and ways of life.

Plus, alas using derogatory works like "Jane, you ignorant slut..." in a response, will almost always bring you to the attention of the mods, Cough...like me, and nobody wants that. You really don't want me to get the cat of nine tails out.... Well hopefully not...

Follow your own instincts.

I think that if you are surprised by the numbers and or qualities of the replies, or the sheer good will, it would be a kindness to mention it. But it does not have to be engraved cards and a gift, either. What you feel comfortable with. Suitable for grandchildren.

Here in the USA most spell it with an A instead of E
