Browsing a Thread

When I open a thread I go back to the post that was last in the thread the last time I opened the thread. That is great. Now, if I browse up the posts and there is a new page, selecting the next page puts me at the top of the page, and not at the next post. That means I have to scroll down to the bottom of the page to continue reading.

Oh, if not clear, I have selected Linear - Newest First.

It would be nice if selecting the next page would position the reader at the next post instead of at the top of the page. Thanks.

I have the newest post first too. I like it lioke that and the way it goes to the first unread post.

Also I have more posts per page selected. I think its 40 per page? so it means I have fewer pages in each thread so your problem would happen less ot me.
So try selecting (if you havent already) the 40 posts per page and see if it helps.

Mark

I do the opposite - Linear/oldest first

I click the "go to first unread post" and then it's all scolling down from there. next page takes me to the top of the page and the next post in sequence.

Thanks for the tips Mark, Ex-Calif. I am going to try both of your tips, all at once.

Like Dan, I prefer linear / oldest first, 40 posts per page. Clicking on Latest Unread takes me to the first new post in a thread. Starting there, when you reach the bottom of one page and go to the next, you go to the top of the page and continue scrolling down, in order. Seems logical, to me.

It may be the only way to do it while functioning as a moderator - the linear / newest first method strikes me as backward and confusing, but I suppose one becomes comfortable with whatever way seems most logical after awhile.

You'd be forever flicking pages, though, wouldnt you?
I virtually never have to flick a page because no thread gets 40 posts in between me having a read. unless its particulalry volitile but boring...!

Either way, folks should experiment with the options diologue as theres some fun tricks in there to make things works better than the 'default'.

When you put on the mod hat, you're forever flicking pages . . . goes with the territory. For me, reading top to bottom is as natural as reading left to right. At 62, changing that pattern now is highly unlikely.

As far as the more volatile threads go, we have to read those, boring or not. I don't want to make it sound more dramatic than it is, but when members are fleeing from a thread because it has gotten nasty we are compelled to fly into it, pulling bodies off the pile and trying to restore order.

We're like bouncers in a bar fight . . .

Good point Mark but flicking the page become natural. I start on the user CP page so all subscribed threads are listed.

I read the first one then use the back button to return to user CP. If I have flicked a couple of pages I click user cp again which refreshes the list and only shows unread.

Like TJ I have multiple windows open at the same time. New threads, moderator window, user profiles etc. To do our strong arm work we often have to be looking at multiple pieces of the puzzle.

Bottom line is that whatever works...

Some threads don't go to first unread?

http://www.cruisersforum.com/forums/...010-45981.html

Why is it when I go to the above thread it always opens at post #1 and there is no button to take me to the first unread post?

Most of the other threads either take me to the first unread post automatically or there is a button that will take me there.

Oh, and I like browsing from the top down, its especially nice when going to the next page. Now if I can get my mouse to stop from scrolling up...

The link you posted is to the first post in the thread, so that's where it'll take you. If you go to the Engines and Propulsion Systems, subforum and scroll down to the thread, you should see the "Go to first unread post" button, to the left of the thread's title. Worked for me, anyway.

Hud's information is correct, Freeze. If you follow his steps and don't find the "Go to first unread post" button to the left of the title, and the title is no longer in bold type, it means there are no new posts in the thread since you last opened it. If you see other threads there that are still in bold type and have the button to the left of the title, they have received new posts since you last opened those threads.

And, of course, this applies to every thread in every Forum. You may not remember opening the thread previously, but the software does . . . it remembers everything.

Okay, thanks guys.

Now, when I reopen this thread, I go directly to the last post, which is what I would expect. However, when I open the referenced post (even by going to the forum as suggested) it opens at post number 1. Something strange going on.

Here is some more info. If I reenter the site and click on this thread it takes me to the last post. If I go to forums, tech support, and open this thread I go to the first post.

There are several was to get to the first unread post in a thread. I have posted 4 shots that show the icon in various places. The icon for first unread post is always a "down" caret. If there is no caret then there are no new posts.

The last photo also show the last post button. This button always takes you to the last post. This icon is the right caret.

Clicking the thread title should take you to the first post in the thread as opposed to the first unread post or last post.

Hope it works for you...
