re: Ads reach a record high - MERGED

Yeah they are huge and everywhere. I dont know of any other forum I'm on that are this bad. Sometimes I think the thread is done and later discover it continued on after another ad!

FWIW,

I thought the ads were intrusive before the new change. Now they are more so. To me, they are a detriment. If i dislike it too much, I am not required to participate here. Or I can work on my internal "ignore" and strengthen it.

I dunno, even before upping to supporter, I don't recall seeing any in between posts, but I use Chrome almost exclusively, and not even with any add-ons. Strange indeed.

Honestly, it has gotten so bad, they bypassed AdBlock the MFKers, by changing something and I've had to manual block them,
and now more appeared, and I agree, I will call it quits on CF soon if it keeps up, I can't even imagine putting up with this sheet without adblock.

Maybe CF should have an "AllAds Thread."

Heck, when I'm bored I could scroll through that and see all the stuff people would like to sell me. Some of it is actually useful.

For adblock plus find and add "element hiding helper" to AB+ in your add-on's. This adds a tool to ABP to make element hiding easy. Then just click the tool inside ABP and highlight the element you don't want to see. A new rule is created.

Being a poor $500/month sailor, ads are totally wasted on my anyway. Plus I have limited bandwidth/ gigs and ad's steal from that just a bit.

As I mentioned in an earlier post, they did not bypass Adblock, they just got a bit sneaky about how they present ads. You only need to make a block of the general URL they use and add a wildcard field to the rest of the address.

How companies go out of business is not by everybody blocking their ads, it is by making the amount and presentation of ads so obnoxious that people go out of their way to block them and get some sense of sanity back to their user experience.

For example, I used to only block a few specific ads here that either blinked or were obnoxiously sized. I allowed all others, as well as all the social media cross-connects, etc. I particularly allowed the ads by members and supporters by going through my rules and unblocking any that were accidentally blocked. However, the ads and their presentation have become so bad now that I have completely blocked everything and am now looking at a fully stripped site.

If the owners are listening and appreciate user feedback, please tone this back down and I will return to helping you on my end.

Mark

Usually in forums such as this you can pay a little to support the forum and that gets rid of the ads, but not here?

There are forums that are free, and have no ads and are well run, the question is a personal one, at what stage do the ads annoy you to the point you walk, I have no problem with Social Knowledge - Andy R (the forum owner) operating their business, its their prerogative. Equally if people leave thats their prerogative. No right or wrong here kiddies, just choices.

re: Ads reach a record high - MERGED

What ive noticed is that the ads seem to be targeted, I don't think we are all getting the same ads, foe example, a few months ago I bought some of those nu wave electric cooktops off a late night tv infomercial, then I started getting inundated with their ads on here and other forums, then I did an online search for an ultrasonic squirrel deterent, now im getting inundated with ads for those products on here, im sure everyone is not getting the same ads. Im getting pretty fed up with it too, this site is about the worst. I will absolutely not buy any product from companies who target me.
