A Moderate Proposal

it seems that it'd be an improvement if a poster could edit their posts for say a day or two after posting (rather than ~ 15 min. as now) It'd save on a large number of duplicate posts (correcting previous ones).

just a suggestion..

A poster has 30 minutes to edit his post, actually. There are two things a poster should do to remedy the "problem" you cite, S&S.

1 - Preview the post before hitting the Submit button.

2 - Read the post immediately after submitting it. If it needs editing, isn't it better to figure that out immediately, rather than a day or two later?

Extending the edit period by keeping the window open longer merely invites chaos in thread continuity. If several posters have responded to a post, then the original poster goes back and edits it, the subsequent replies may no longer make any sense.

If there is an actual problem with a post that should be corrected after the edit window closes, use the Report Post button (white triangle, red border, black exclamation mark.) Explain the problem in a few words and a moderator will take a look at the post, correcting it if it seems like a good idea.

Fair 'nuf, just used to having more time - some places you can edit forever.

What's the reasoning behind the short editing window?

In your user CP.

Click on the link to usercp on the upper blue nav bar.
Look for settings and options on the left side menu
Select edit options and scroll down to find the time zone choices. Make the change and scroll to the bottom of the page to save.

No, sorry, I did not word my question properly.

How does the administrator change the default time for the edit of posts function?

Sorry.

I am sure it is in an area I can't access. Duh! Does it have a name?

I agree, longer than 30 minutes and you get chaos. You see people making trollish or angry posts, people getting angry at him, then he goes back and edits it with something moderate, and the rest look like morons/trolls themselves.

This and other reasons I agree with the current 30min policy. It is more than enough time to re-read your post and ensure it made sense.

The setting to change this is buried in the software settings and yes, changing it is an admin thing.

That said, we've tried a number of different options in the past for member post edits. After a lot of trial and error, 30 minutes is where we ended. Long enough for simple edits - but not so long as to disrupt thread continuity. Again - moderators are available to help with edits needed after this point although there nothing wrong with somply posting to a thread a second time to add clarity.

Another possible problem would be that the emailed version of the post would be different than the posted version...I dont believe this can currently happen without mod input...

Just for awareness the mods are able to read previous and current versions of member postings as well as deleted postings.
