One of my crew is in hospital having had some pretty serious surgery two days ago. She's likely to be in for another two weeks and then need an extended period of convalescence, three month or more. The boat is her home but it's not exactly an ideal place when your feeling fragile and possibly need further medical intervention. We could get a flat in London but it's a dreary place to spend the winter.

We are all EU citizens and we're looking for somewhere that has

No problems with obtaining a visa for at least 3 months and probably 6 months.

Good medical care, cost is not an issue.

A warm but not hot climate.

Relatively flat in the resort area, she's not going to be up to climbing any hills for a while.

Suggestions based on personal experience would be very welcome.

Thank you

Land Life / Boat Life

I have been wondering if other women have felt this way so thought I'd start a thread about the clash of land life and boat life.

My land friends think I am a bit of a tomboy cause I know how to use a drill or know how to change the oil in my diesel MD20. (which we all know are pretty rudimentary skills - no big deal)

My boat friends think I am a bit of a princess because I love pink and get pedicures. A sailor friend calls me the "barefoot princess".

Its a funny thing, to have such differing opinions. It feels like I have a foot in two different worlds. Of course I am what I am, not trying to apologize for it. I just find it funny how one minute I am a tomboy, next minute a princess.

Anyone else have a similar experience?

Hey anyone and everyone,
We are looking to make the move to liveaboard/cruiser in about a year. The beginning stages are in motion. Starting to rid the house of years of accumulation that if kept would have to drag behind on a barge. I turned 50 this year and am looking at this move as a very exciting new adventure. But then the mom guilts start. Presently I have 2 of the 3 children living at home. Their ages are almost 22 and 20 year olds. Both have tried school and decided not to continue. Neither are working full time. I am struggling with feeling the responsibility to continue to give them a place to live and wanting to take back my life. Financing this adventure will most likely need for me to sell the house and use some of that money for liveaboarding. That sense of "homebase" is gone. There is no more the family house to come to for holiday events or if they need mom to help with a life struggle. So how did any of you, male or female, deal with this conflict when you decided to go into this lifestyle? All perspectives welcomed!!

In fairness I wondered what would happen if I turned the "women want" question around. We of course got mostly men's answers to the "what do women want". Probably due to more men than women posters on the site (women are out there lurking), or maybe they just don't know and won't say.

So....What do men want on the boat?

I'll start....women and beer!
