Hey there, Just dropping in to say, "Hey!"
After much discussion my family of 4 are about to embark on the journey of our lives. We have decided to sell the house and everything we own, practically, and sail the seas.

I've started a blog to document my progress and pursuit and I'd really appreciate any help, tips, suggestions whatever..

Adventures Of The Sea

The Crew:

Damon & Jenny: I've been on boats since I was a kid. no real sailing experience but canoes and kayaks, camping all that outdoor stuff I'm pretty proficient in. Jenny's been on boats a lot, her father used to own a few powerboats, she loves the water and was all in when I told her my idea.

Kids:
Lizzy (age 13) Mary (age 9)
Love the idea but are leary of the lack of space and our ability to remain sane.. Lizzy wants to be a marine biologist possibly so she's all in as well as Mary who really thinks pirates are really cool.

At this point I'm gathering as much data as I can and trying to throw together a timeline as well as a budget. Right now we are looking to set sail sometime maybe early summer late spring of 2010. Looks like we have about $180,000 to live off of. Right now I plan for $2000/mo expenses and total boat costs of about $100,000. I've looked at a couple of boats online andd am narrowing down my choices of boats to actually go and visit. here's the short list (always open to suggestions)

Whitby42Valiant 40
Cabo Rico 38
Morgan Out Island 41
Gozzard 36

For some reason I'm drawn to higher displacement more keel area boats. I suggested a Snowgoose catamaran but Jenny thinks they aren't as safe.

We are looking for safety then comfort. As far as boat cost the $100k is ready to sale (all repairs, upgrades, whatever) done..

We plan to stick near the east coast for a few months learning the ship, taking some sailing lessons, eventually head to Florida and the keys and whatnot a few months before really setting off for the next who knows how long.

So if you could recommend some places to help me along that'd be great please try to use the blog, I really would like to use it as aplace to consolidate all this information and get a handle on all this planning.

Hi all,

I'm a college kid, currently in my 3rd year at Georgetown, with absolutely no sailing experience. I've always wanted to sail the Caribbean islands, but my time will be severely limited after I graduate, so this upcoming 3-wk winter break will be one of the few opportunities I have before graduating and starting a job.

So my question is: how should I go about finding a boat to sail on? Being in college, my ability to pay is slightly inadequate (read: broke). However, I am willing to work hard, learn the ropes, and am theoretically inexpensive to have aboard, sans the food I eat.

Any advice or direction would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Steve

Hello to all
We joined last year as we went about rebuilding the "Volvo" after oil pump failure. Based in Dunedin we venture as far south as Stewart Island but desire adventures further afield. We have a 10M custom built mast head sloop, big volume and brilliant for the coastal stuff we have done to date. Two weeks ago while on anchor up the coast we had a Southern Right whale and calf encircle us, priceless. Its supposed to be summer here but the forecast on the news is talking snow showers down to 400M.
Safe sailing
Paul & Robyn

I've been sailing on the Hudson River NY for the last 10 years. Three years ago I decided to exchange my J27 for a cruiser. I found a 1977 Endeavour 32 and have done a little cruising and a lot of renovation and repairs. That's OK because I wanted an old boat to learn how to fix various things. I've worked a good deal on the old Yanmar 2QM20 engine, thru-hulls, fiberglass, the head and standing rig. Now it's almost ready for some trips! I've got some questions and hope to get some hard advice.

I am new to sailing and my boyfriend has experience. He hasn't had the opportunity to sail in a few years, but has now purchased a 29 foot Bayfield. He purchased it in Florida last winter so he was able to spend a few weeks down there, and sailed from northern Florida to the Keys. I joined him a couple times and loved it! We are heading to Florida in a couple weeks. The boat is dry docked in Tavernier in the Keys. We will be down there for 3 weeks and are planning to sail to the Dry Tortugas and Key West.
Looking forward to the adventure, and I keep saying I can only hope my employer will start offering year long sabbaticals as I will be the first to sign up, and have the opportunity to be a cruiser!!
Looking forwad to learning lots from this site, and will begin looking for some info on sailing the Keys!

I am retired Navy (21 years) with more than 1/2 of that at sea in destroyers. After retiring I stood for my Chief Mate License (all gross tons and all oceans) and passed it on the second time around (celestial killed me the first time). Now after teaching in the public school system for more than 13 years (Naval Junior ROTC), I am ready to go back to sea and stay in that environment. I am looking for a boat and a few other adjustments. My present home is now Edenton, NC, USA on the Albemarle Sound. Greetings to you all.

Hello everyone,

I am new to sailing (past six years on our 14' Holder and several charters) and an expert at walking on the decks of our motorsailer, 15 feet above the ground!

I've learned a lot about boats, sailing, relationships, and life through the literal, six year deconstruction of our Challenger Anacapa 42. It's coming together now and learning something new everyday keeps me going.

It's good to know that all of you tackle and solve similar problems.

My favorite boat job.....sanding. My least favorite boat thing.....getting epoxy in my hair.

Thanks to everyone who responded to Christian's thread, Cruisers Who Fail.
