Hello everyone. My name is Lucky I'm new to the forums, and I am 23 years old and a nurse and I am considering on living aboard in Southern California. I do not have a sailboat, I do not have sailing experience. I do plan on getting lessons before I buy and do plan on getting a sailboat vs. power boat. I just want to know what are the expenses/maintenance I will encountering if I do decide to live aboard. Also what are the pros and cons you have experienced in while living aboard and what you miss most about living in a home/apartment. I truly want to live aboard for a good 2 year if not more before I decide to get married and have kids. Thanks everyone! I really appreciate your help.:thumb:

Some time ago I read a piece on the 'net that I would like to read again and ask the author's permission to reproduce. It went something like this;

Q: Why are cruisers afraid of people living on land?

A: Think about it. You get up early, drive like crazy to get to work to so you can work 10 hrs to by a bigger house you have to fill up so you work even more hours ......... We wake up when we wake up. If the sun is shining we go fishing, scuba. If it's raining we get out a book and stay in.

The reason we are afraid of you is you are all crazy! Why else would you live like that.

Can anyone help?

I'm getting ready to order a new laptop, and for just $31.99 can add a combo printer/scanner/copier to my order (from HP).

I'd like to get opinions on whether a device like this makes sense on for a liveaboard cruising boat. (Don't look at my current boat, we will be buying a bigger boat for full-time cruising...!) It does take up valuable stowage, but I can see where it could come in very handy at times. I'd never considered taking our regular printer, but with the added copy/scanning functions, I can think of more uses for such a device onboard.

Thanks! :)

Hi! I'm new... as in new to this whole thing! Like a ton of folks... I want to live on a boat in the carribean with my hubbie and 2 kids. Problem is... we know nothing about boating at all... but are excited to learn. We are taking some boating classes this summer and are working hard to pay off our house so we can go... I think financially in 5 years... don't know if we'll know enough about boats by then.

I know a lot of you think we are silly... I know it's a lot to learn...

One thing I don't understand about living aboard (and forgive me... I haven't read all the old posts yet) is that everything I read about mooring in the USVI is that all the moorings are for daytime use.... does everyone just anchor at night? I know you can't anchor in the park areas, but can you anchor everywhere else? I can't find any info on if it's legal or not... and from what I gather... the other option is to live at a marina.... but they seem to be pretty pricey...

Thanks for reading... we just crave the simplier life... less stuff, less cleaning... less to do... luckily... we are already pretty minimalistic... I know it won't be all perfect... but you only have one life... and I want to try to do what I've always wanted to do...

Thanks for reading and I look foward to following the boards...

Winterizing a Liveaboard

This is going to be my first winter as a liveaboard. I bought Floating Bear in July, I'm still in love it it. I would like to thank everyone on this forum for helping me make a good decision.

Now to my point. I will be living on my boat for the winter in Washington DC, it normally doesn't get real cold here, but then again I'm from Michigan. The boat is going to stay in the water, until I take it out in the spring for some new bottom paint. I don't plan on being gone for more than a couple of days, no vacations planned. The marina has bubblers in the water to help the water from freezing around the boats. My question is what systems should I winterize? Obviously I have to switch from a hose to hauling my own water, but do I have to or should I winterize the heads and shower? The water heater? Or, the engines? I've heard from a couple people in the marina, that all I have to do is put two space heaters in the engine room and they will be fine.

Any thoughts from the long time liveaboards? What kinds of things should I expect from living on water than land during the winter.

Yes I bet it's been asked a million time, but I'm trying to come up with a spreadsheet to run operational costs for a powered yacht and a sailing yacht being used as a liveaboard/cruiser (as a tool for estimating), wondering if I could get people more familiar (ie. not newcomers like myself) with the subject of living aboard both engine powered and sail powered yachts to chime in and help me itemize the costs... insurance, berthing, mx are no brainers so far.
