Just a word of wisdom to those that are looking to work and cruise.. It is possible but sometimes gets out of hand.. and you lose prospective on why you are working in the first place..
Just a short,
Back in March of this year we pulled into a marina here in the California Delta to take a break and do a little work on the boat as we've been goofing off for the past 7 years and sight seeing from Alaska to Mexico and all points between.
And a couple people here in the Marina found out we've been doing Canvas Repair as we traveled.. It didnt take long before we moved our work off the boat and into a shop in the marina complex and hung up a shingle with a name on it..
Well, that was 8 months ago, and we had planned on moving south for the winter into warmer climate, but things have changed... Our small business has grown to the point that we're setting dates for jobs as far out as 3 months and the wife is setting at her table on the other end of our shop sewing victorian formal wear for the Sacramento Opera...
And a week or so ago we went out and purchased a new "JUKI" sewing machine for doing canvas work on..
And On the way back home after making the purchase, I looked over to the wife and mentioned that the new machine has fixed legs on it..
We looked at each other and didnt have to say anymore as we were both thinking the same thing.. Our Dreams of Cruising have ended, at least for a time..
We still live on the boat, but she's tyed to a dock, and the birds are using the spreaders as a morning roost.. The business is booming and we have more work than we know what to do with..
So I have this cautionary tale to tell you.. We cruisers are a rare breed and we're known to do things right the first time as there may never be second chance, those that have been there know of what I speak. And when you take our vast knowledge and start working among the dwellers of the land, we excell in any trade we chose.. Its in us...
Beware that you dont get caught as I have with not only a job but a thriving business to hold you ashore..
And for the present, all I can do is dream of the next time I raise my head to smell the sweet aroma of salt air...........

VAT Question on Registering a Boat

Hello,

The boat I own is registered in South Africa to the company that I bought the boat from. V.A.T. has not been paid on the boat. The time has now come to registering the boat in my name and I need to do it outside SA, because if I register the boat there I'll have to pay V.A.T.

I needless to say want to avoid paying the V.A.T., but what's the best way of doing just that?

Are there any smart ways to register the boat, to avoid paying the dreaded V.A.T?

In Norway the V.A.T. is 24%, so you can imagine how economically unviable paying that is for me. If it wasn't for the fact that I am returning to Norway with the boat early next year, I would register her there, because in Norway you don't need to pay the V.A.T. before you get the boat into Norwegian waters. Since I am returning home, I need to think of something smart. Does anyone have any god suggestions?

I have always heard there is a lot of work available anywhere you land for Heating, A/C and refrigeration mechanics. I am just curious as to what thoughts anyone has on this good or bad. I am also a plumber and welder and my plan is to try and make some income from time to time while I'm cruising. I am not licensed as an electrician however I have a lot of knowledge in that area also as it applies to the HVAC field. I met a guy years ago who claimed he had kept busy in Australia just working on other cruisers boats doing electrical for quite a while. Just curious as to what everyone's seen out there. Thanks in advance for any input!!!!

Hi all,
Some experienced advice would be welcomed!! We are looking to make the transition from landlubbers to liveaboard/cruisers. I am a nurse and he is an owner of a small company that writes software. The company is going through a phase and looks like he will be the only employee left standing. Opportunity seems to be knocking and we are opening the door. Plan is that he can do his software writing on the boat, but my skills are land based. I figured we could stay at bigger ports and I would try to get agency work for a few months and build up the kitty again. Still many kinks to work out, but we are ready to jump in. Figured we can always come back to the land if it doesn't work out. Anyone with any experience with nurses combining career with cruising?

Hi

I own a Hurley 22 which my wife and I port hop along the Cornish coast (logged 625nm this season)
I am interested, do any small yacht go far these days?

I know Hurleys 22s in the past have crossed the the Atlantic and the Pacific, yachts get bigger and bigger but do they get better and better?

Only time stops me from going farther (nine days at a time max)

Good sailing
