I am near Norfolk, the Chesapeake Bay and on the Virginia Cut ICW. None of which look appealing to swim, maybe not even safe. I don't know.

Would you VA and NC locals share the location of swimming areas with me?

What are the dangers swimming around there?

How far South or North do I need to go for good, safe swimming (relative). Albermarle or Pamlico sounds maybe?

I want to take family out on the boat and they want to swim and jump from the boat, but I am not native to the east coast and unfamiliar with local conditions and dangers.

I guess I am mostly worried because the water is dark and I can't see what is in there and I see a lot of JellyFish.

At what point heading south does the water become clear, like in Florida?

Or are there some fingers/rivers off the Chesapeake Bay that are nice to swim?

Thanks in advance!

Futurecruiser's thread on swimming in the ocean -- and Ocean Girl's marvelous response -- got me thinking. What have been some of your "peak experiences" when sailing?

Just so we're on the same track, a Peak Experience is defined as (thank you Wikipedia):

Peak experience is a term used to describe certain transpersonal and ecstatic states, particularly ones tinged with themes of euphoria, harmonization and interconnectedness. Participants characterize these experiences, and the revelations imparted therein, as possessing an ineffably mystical (or overtly religious) quality or essence.

Although I can think of a few, one of them that I've had several times is taking the 4 am to 8 am morning watch. Most of the other folks I've known hate that shift.

I love it.

Pitch black with only the stars out, maybe some biolum in the wakes.

The faint glow of red over the nav table and the little dots of green all in a row, saying that all is right on our little ship.

Everybody else is asleep, even Sam Dog is breathing slowly, easily under my feet.

The wind in the sails; the water sliding down the hulls.

And, then --- the world awakens!

Magic and wonder still live in the world.

I paint watercolours, fish, scuba-dive and can amuse myself for hours doing small repairs to my boat. My wife enjoys felting, a hobby which does not automatically spring to mind as one of the top ten hobbies for liveaboards. Does any one out there (a) felt on board (while moored up) (b) do any other wool related crafts, and if so, how do you keep the wood from getting damp?
