I had a professor in college that took his old beat up mustang down to Mexico to have it completely restored. I saw it when it got back and it was beautiful car. I don't know how much he paid but supposedly it was much much cheaper to get done in Mexico than in the US.

I have friends in both Mexico and Colombia that say you can get labor for about $200/month. I'm looking at a local Columbia 36 that is in need of a complete refit but would need minimal work to sail/motor. The idea is to buy the boat for cheap and sail it to SA where I can hire three guys for three months to completely gut and refit the boat. Now parts are going to be expensive anywhere you go but the labor should be around $2000 for the whole thing.

I would like to know if anyone has done this and what your experience has been. Too good to be true? Thanks.

Hello,
I was thinking to build my own Watermaker (12 Volt, 10-12 Gal/hr.).
Any suggestions, plans, guidelines,BOM etc.???
Is that a good idea to build one or should I just buy one, but they are pretty expensive. When I look at the production units, they do not look that complicated, or am I wrong with this?
Thanks for any help

My boat is 30 years old at this point and is really showing her age inside. All the wood surfaces are covered in chipped and flakingvarnish. The formica counter and tables are stained. And the walls are covered in a no longer white waffe pattern vinyl wall paper. At least the headiner is just about perfect. I have decided I need to do some updating in there. Im looking for ideas for walls and galley counter tops. Painted cabinets?
Head countertops, Will take any advice or pictures of what you have done or seen.

When I set my 1977 Endeavour 32 up on dry dock this year, we tilted it back as usual to help the scuppers to drain. There were two 8” blocks under the keel, spaced about 1/3 each. The bottom of the keel must have cracked open as we laid the boat back on the rear block and about a gallon of water drained out the bottom of the keel, which I believe came from the bilge, because the bilge was bone dry when I looked. I added more water to the bilge and it immediately drained out the keel.

My plan is to re-line the bilge with some good membrane, dry the keel void and apply some neat resin and fix the bottom of the keel. I like to get some advice on all of this. The keel void might have been holding water for a while, and maybe not.

“The 1977 E32 keel has a 5000 lb lead ballast encapsulated with solid poly fiberglass. The keel is molded integrally with the hull and all ballast is contained inside.” The keel is probably void, aft of the lead ballast.

...

With too many projects on-going (yes I know .. prioritize and complete) ...
one is requiring attention and moving to the top of the list ...

insulation ... for the V berth specifically and the entire boat (potentially)

Again ...the '67 Cal 28 is a test bed for acquiring skills and knowledge as a move up 6-8 feet is planned in 2-3 years ... and it is the San Francisco Bay cold I am primarily concerned about ... and yes ... I am not the handiest bulb on the string ...

There are a few instructional posts on this subject

Capt'n Pauley's Virtual Boatyard -- Projects Galore!!!: Installing Insulation in Your Boat

The Frugal Mariner: Advice for the cash-starved boater -- Insulating your boat

SetSail » Blog Archive » Adding Insulation to Wind Horse

I have come to the conclusion that "reflectix" seems to be the most cost-efficient and easiest way to go ...

My specific questions are ...

V berth (primary focus for the moment)

- two layers sufficient/required?
- what about adding polyethylene foam between between the layers?
- can the "reflectrix" be set directly against the hull ... or should there be an 'air pocket' left ... (the insulation is to be covered in fabric for a more aesthetically pleasing feel and look)
- if so, can it simply be caulked on?
- should the below water level areas (accessible via storage compartments) be insulated to a greater degree?
- any ideas for the anchor locker?

There is currently condensation build-up above only (marine plywood fiber-glassed over) and I have concerns this will continue even if I add a small dehumidifier ... what precautions can be taken to resolve this issue (again ... insulation to be covered in fabric ... but this piece not being done immediately as I have to reset the safety stanchions per Maine Sail's informative guide ... (another pressing project)

Re-Bedding Hardware Photo Gallery by Compass Marine at pbase.com

(yes I read it for the photos ... unashamed)

as if I am not asking enough ... will continuing to insulate the hull ... especially in the cabin and aft berth areas ... help in keeping the chill from my feet (still 40 years removed from humping in the boonies ... rather sensitive to wet and cold)

Thanks to all for their patience ... time and expertise in replying.

Just came back from hauling our boat, and walking around the docks, I saw a newly painted boat with Man Ship hatches. Does anyone have any experience or knowledge of them. Doing a search, they are Chinese made. Retail, they seem a little high, but they are OEM for some builders, so they can probably be purchased more reasonably. I need to change two hatches that are the access for the propane and sail lockers on the aft deck.

My name is Ed, I've been lurking around here for a couple years - working on a boat. I've got a question for anybody that knows more about paint than me-that's everybody.
Has anyone used the System Three LPU? I've read the manufacurer's liturature, but would like someone who has used it to tell me if it is any good.
I'm thinking of using it on the deck and possibly the hull.
Thanks

I am looking considering a Catalina 25 here in Fl. The boat is on the hard, and has been so for about 6 monts. The bottom was done about a year prior to taking it out of the water. I was under the impression that a bottom job out of water, oxidizes faster when out of the water. 1) Is this true? and 2) can I get away with putting the boat back in the water till next winter, or does the bottom HAVE to be done now? I have the $ to do the bottom now, but that would exhaust all my resources right now. I would like to give myself some time to refill my cauffers before having another out go.
