Hello all -

We just installed a rebuilt Universal 5411 into our Cal 2-29 to replace the old Farymann that came with the boat. The engine has a total of 27 hours on it since the rebuild. We've had it out a couple of times and all seemed well until yesterday when we developed an oil leak.

It looks as though the leak is coming from behind the starter flange where it bolts to the rear end plate (I've attached pictures and will post more if that will help). We tightened down both of the bolts on the starter flange but it did not help, and it looks as though there *may* be a break in the bottom of the starter gasket. We are prepared to tear into this and replace the gasket but before we do we need to know: should there even be oil in that area? We've got all the service and parts manuals but we can't find an oil circulation diagram to tell whether it's even possible for oil to be leaking from that gasket.

Thanks so much for any help you can offer. Off to the courthouse to change our name to 'Murphy'... :banghead:

G'Day All.
We are presently sailing down the East Coast of Aust in a FP40 cat with 2 x MD2030 sail-drives. After some work was done on her in Mackay (added an inverter and an AIS plus replaced the batteries for AGM (900Ah).
All was fine until the first day out when the stb tacho went to max then died with a blinking hour meter.
After a bit of swearing we decided that we could live with 1 tacho working and one not.
Today the port tacho has maxed out and won't come back.
Any help would be appreciated as we still have a long way to run and my rev-guessing ability is not flash.
Before anybody asks the obvious, no there isn't enough wind.

Fair winds

Hi to all,

I am looking to build a simple/portable fuel filtering/polishing system that will allow me to pull fuel out of my main tank into Jerry cans and vis versa.

I also want to keep it inexpensive, can I use regular house hold water filtering parts to clean the fuel? Or do I have use specific fuel filters for good results?

Thanks for any feedback!

Cheers,

We are seriously looking at a boat with an early 80's model Sailmaster 7.5 outboard. The engine is on a mount on the transom and is currently pull start. I am thinking of doing one of two things: either scrapping the old engine and getting a newer one or buying and mounting a throttle/gear shifter and key starter for the older one. I haven't had a chance to really check out the engine yet to see if it is worth hanging onto.

From what info I have I think this model engine has a starter, can anyone confirm this? Provided it does and that the engine has had normal usage and is in average condition for an engine of this vintage is it even worth hanging onto and investing money into a throttle and key start for it? If it does happen to die could I then use the throttle and ignition system on a replacement motor, ie are they interchangeable? Does anyone have an old service manual for one of these so I could learn a little more?

I am actually looking to buy a used HR43 with a Volvo 55 HP and not sure if this is powerful enough for a RTW trip.
Many 43' of similar displacement are now equipped with 75 HP, including the new HR43.

Hi everyone am bringing the boat up from Cabo to La Paz after the Baja Ha Ha. Have limited wifi so can't research very much. here is the scenario --- new engine (540 hours and well maintained) Yanamar 4JH4E. Had a problem with wihite smoke in turtle bay polished the fuel and everything is better. While polishing fuel found lots of crud in the fuel. Seems to work fine as long as I keep it under 2k rpms.

new problem.Get the engine over 2000 RPMS and the engine begins to race and then the exhaust fills with blue smoke. hard to kill the engine. If we lower the RPMs below 2k the engine runs fine. No changes to the engine but I did put a 6" extension on the exhaust. Any ideas what could be causing this? Injectors? Timing? Valves? I have a theory that oil is somehow causing the engine to race but have no supporting data. Any ideas would really help. Please give me things to check.

I'm guessing this is the temperature sender? Anybody know of a download for a parts listing for a 4JH-TE?

And I snapped off this part when I was draining the water from the engine. It just crumbled. It's the cooling water inlet into the mixing elbow. Any idea how to get the remnants out without destroying the elbow? They're expensive to replace ($1300 US)
The muffler and exhaust hose that came with the engine has inlet/outlet size of 1-5/8". Somewhere along the line there must have been a reducer of some sort but that wasn't included. I have the service manual for the engine but there's no mention of minimum exhaust size requirements. I don't know much about diesel engines, well actually at this point I know nothing about them, but if they breath better, larger exhaust, they should run better no? Can I go down to 2" all the way back (approx 12' run through water lock, muffler & gooseneck)? That should be better for the engine or should I keep it 3" all the way back?
