Normally I wouldn't put out a question on a specific boat. But, I have not really been able to find out much about these. These boats look to be a good value with great layout and tankage. But I have seen the same ones on yatchworld for some time, which makes me wonder why they don't sell better and why the price seems kind of low. Now I have never gone to see one so if I did maybe something just jumps out.

One of the things that I can not get my head around is the pretty light displacement. I think this has something to do with an old flat bottom IOR design. But at the same time the boat has lots of ballast for it's displacement and with the centrelboard I would assume it wouldn't heel too bad (my wife kind of hates life at 20+ degrees). I'm sure the boat is pretty fast, but have to question whether it is going to be real rocky and uncomfortable in semi-rough weather due to the displacement.

Any thoughts? I posted a link to one if anyone wants to take a look.

I'm not one to usually pander to the free boat scene..but this one might be different.

Sounds like there is a sad ending to a gallant attempt here and possibly a gallant and heartfelt offering by someone one on the short end of life's rope passing his dream on to to someone worthy of it.......maybe not and its like all other free boats...a nightmare as well.

I have not looked at it but it is close to me so I could if anyone is genuinely interested.

Newbies... This is a complex boat so pleas don't think this is not going to cost 10"s of thousands to finish...and waste my time..:)

If any one has experiance of a shoal keel vessel as above would you care to comment on the pros and cons please.

I am put of by the shallow keel as i fear performance and to-wind issues, what do you say guys and girls, am i right or am i as always wrong ?

Also i fear sliding of the wave in heavy seas,

Look forward to hearing from any one with relevant input.

Being a former mono hull owner I was constantly told how much better Cats were. Always by those owning one sometimes I wondered who thay were trying to convince. Now all boats have there +-s but it seemed that Cats only have +++s that is until the October edition of Cruising helmsman a very well read Australian cruising magazine. The article is nearly four pages but anyone interested would do well to get a copy. Basicly a live aboard couple with a 32 foot Swanson leave there boat in a Marina in North QLD and crew aboard a luxury South African built cat for the last leg home to SA of a round the world cruise. Obviously they also had been fed all the same sales pitch about cats as I Quote "If we had thought life was going to be flat on a Catamaran compared to a mono we were wrong. Bang! Crash! Thump! Suddenly I was wearing lunch on my face" As I said it is a long article much of which is positive but it certainly dubunks a lot of the hype. From my own point of view knowing a little about how things work I could never understand how two hulls that sit on top of the water much more than a mono hull, could hold a cabin flat while sailing in rough weather. The article is well worth getting hold of and I think is a much more balanced view of the Cat Vs Mono debate than I have ever read.

Any one with experience or info on Island Trader 46. We know they were built in Tiawan from different yards, meaning the quaility is more reflective of the yard. Looking for further info. Found one in Fl interested in with refit of almost everything but needs the cosmetic TLC. That appeals because can do projects while living on. It's a motor sailor. That appeals for the 15' beam and pilot house for weather. Any insights and opinions welcome. So far everyone has directed me to abandon the "children" and do the cruising life. No I'm asking the experts about the "house". Thanks in advance for your input and interest.

Hull Stringer Sealing?

I'm replacing the head Y valve on our boat, and the old valve was mounted to the hull stringer using four coarse thread screws (look like #10 screws to me). The new Y valve has a slightly different screw pattern, so I'm only going to be able to reuse one or two of the old screw placements.

That leaves at least two open holes into the hull stringer. I'm not quite sure what the stringer material is, but it seems likely to me that if those holes aren't sealed, they could allow moisture into the stringer - seems like they should be sealed.

Am I right? Can I leave those holes open, or should I seal them? Assuming they should be sealed, what should I use?

Thanks for the help. You guys are always awesome.
