Any suggestions on the best place to do this? We are chartering with Sunsail at Oyster Pond.

I'm planning, very soon, to go "Down South" through some of the ICW just for the adventure and the fun of coming back with my wife up some of the ICW (she's not an avid sailor, especially out of sight of land). I'm a diehard "cheapskate", and although I plan on occasionally using a marina for showers, gas, food etc. I expect to anchor out often. Should I bring my dinghy? (I'll have to tow it) I'll be leaving the boat from late Nov. until early May, when WE will bring it back. I had planned on taking it, then it just occurred to me that it might not be there when I return. Should I be concerned, and, should I bring the dinghy or "streamline" the trip by leaving it behind?

Thanks in advance!

Hi Everyone, New user here and have lots of questions but let's start with this one. I see alot of cruisers leaving the Annapolis/ Baltimore area ( which is where I live) leaving for the islands in the winter. This being hurricane season down there, how do you manage that? Do you keep an eye on the weather and move north or south as needed? How about insurance? My carrier says no go during the season. Do you go anyway and take the risk? Thanks....Sid

But no one seems to mention Bermuda????? What are the there reasons for this? It is obviously not a hot spot for people on this forum. Is it a case of "can't get there from here" or just not a great place to visit?

I could use some assistance or direction. Would anyonebe able to direct me to a checklist of documents needed in order to leave the USA as a green card holder on a US boat that I purchased 2 yrs ago to sail to the Carib? I know that I cannot get USCG (foreign owned) reg and that TX reg is sufficient for most islands along with insurance papers and crew lists. As boat still has small loan outstanding I do not have the title (with bank), is this a prob or are purchasing docs and Texas Reg sufficient. Also heard about a Form 300 ?? needed. Any help much appreciated. Reg's Sam Vogel

Hello everybody!

We are three young guys in Miami looking to purchase a sailboat to cruise the Caribbean on. Today we went to a marina and looked at a few boats. One that stood out is a 1979 Catalina 30' with a 2001 Yanmar diesel.

1979 Catalina Aft Cockpit Sail Boat For Sale - www.yachtworld.com

We would love to hear back from people who know this boat, or really anyone who knows anything about boats and can tell us the pros and cons of this one. Please be brutally honest, we are possibly about to invest a big chunk of money into this boat and would like to know as much about it as possible.

This site has been so helpful in the past. Gotta love sailors.

Hey all,

Been a long time lurker and now need some advice. We are putting our circumnavigation on hold for two years and cant leave our boat in Brazil because of the two year time limit they impose on vessels. I need to get it back to ireland. I am curious on your views on routes and timing.

Ideally I would like to start moving around april. I have some concerns:

1. It is REALLY difficult to sail north from Rio and especially getting around Cabo Frio before June time frame when the trades and southerly current start to abate. But if I leave that late I hit the caribbean smack during the start of hurricane season...

2. ...which askes me the second question - should I just take her up north and into the gulfstream w/o stopping in the caribbean and do a non-stop passage?

3. any ideas for a route that gets me moving through before hurricane season but without beating my head against a wall trying to get from Rio into the north hemi trades?

thanks all

oh, and the boat is 42' aluminum Cutter - strong as a brick shit house and I have around 60-70,000 blue water miles if that helps with the advice

-cheers!!
