I've been searching for a boat for a while now, and thus formulated a reasonable idea of what a boat should cost. I came across a boat at a very good price, and at the bottom of the posting was the note:

"This boat had a hard grounding in 2004 then a main refit has been done in 2004 2005"

Which obviously explains a lot.

I've asked for more info on the damage done and repairs carried out, but my questions for those more knowledgeable are:

1) can a boat which has had major repairs below the waterline be a good boat, or will it be weaker, prone to other issues like concealed water damage not repaired, etc?

2) would you buy a "repaired" boat?

Thanks,
Bill

Weekend Warriors - What Did You Spend this Year?

Tomorrow I have to go move the boat for haulout and winter storage. But I did get a hard half year of sailing out of it this year in the northeast and liked it enough to continue the learning curve and planning. Being my first boat and just to mess up my mind I held track of how much my hobby cost me this year. Not counting boat payments themselves I've spend $7495 on the boat, and after I pay the rest of the winter storage bill it's going to be around $8400. Looking at it the biggest costs were boat storage (mooring and winter storage) which were about $3400 combined. My next was the getting off the sand bar the first time I went out ($1600) that hope not to repeat (have insurance for this now). I do have some projects that need doing, only a couple that are "must do" and which are mainly cheap labor jobs for me. In the end I spent almost the same last year taking lessons and joining a sailing club.

Just wondering how everyone else made out?

OK, this is not exactly sailing related except that I am trying to buy some gear for my boat. I found an ad online for a piece of equipment but the seller is in CA and I'm in FL. First the seller offered to send the item after he received the money. Since we're talking $700 and I don't know him from Adam I declined and offered to do the deal COD, payment with certified funds.

The seller declined that, claiming he has been burned in the past with a counterfeit cashiers check. I can't argue against that since I know that can be a problem. I checked with UPS, FedEx, and the US Post Office. All offer COD options of secured payment but that means cashiers checks or money orders that the seller won't accept. No one I've found has a cash only option, in fact most will not accept cash at all.

Every other method I've checked essentially works out that the seller gets the money before I can get the gear which I'm not going to do. I checked Paypal which offers buyer protection but only if it is an eBay auction, but not for private sales.

I should add that after exchanging emails for a week plus checking the guy out online I'm 99% certain that he is legit and will not burn me, but at this point it has become a contest of wills as much as a security concern. Thought this would be a simple purchase but now I feel like I'm trying to do a hostage exchange at Checkpoint Charlie.

So anyone have any ideas?

I would like a gold lettering, (imitation of course) and would want to see exactly how it would look prior to plunking down 300 bucks for it.
Thanks,
If I am really only able to sail a few times a year would it be cheaper to rent a boat than to own one (maybe for a week at the longest)?
