Is not my favorite task. I recently heard about a new product for cleaning rust off stainless. I ordered some and upon arrival I tried it on a rusty snap shackle. Amazing results! NO rubbing, just brush on an wait!

I have no interest in the company, just sharing some good news.

Link 2000 Replacement Recommendations

Our Link 2000 died 13 months after installation and we are looking for a battery monitoring system replacement. I am not going to be buying any more Xantrex products after this... Why? We have used a Link 2000 on our boats for several years. The Link got zapped by lightening and it was replaced by the insurance company early last year. On our return from the Bahamas, our Link started showing a negative discharge on one of the banks even though testing showed positive current flow during charging. I called up technical support when we got back to the Keys and after a round of in situ testing, Xantrex agreed that the Link was defective. The tech support person mentioned that they have been having trouble with the Link 2000's and may be discontinued. When it came time to replace the unit, I mentioned that we installed it 13 months ago (it's a 12 month warranty) and things changed. Sorry, too bad, the warranty is expired. To say the least I wasn't happy. A $600 piece of eletronics has a defect and it's one month out of warranty so too bad.

This is so different than our previous experience. When we got struck by lightening several years ago Xantrex replaced the Link 2000 for $75...no questions asked. Very good customer service then...very poor customer service now. It's interesting to note that West Marine no longer carries the Link 2000...mmmm

Anyway, I am looking at the Blue Sea Systems VSM 422 Vessel Systems Monitor and wondering if anyone has any recommendations about this or alternatives we should look at. The Blue Sea Systems monitor has a 3 year warranty. Thanks in advance for your recommendations...

I recently purchased a SpeedSeal saltwater pump cover kit for my engine. Their advertisement and web-site shows the screws that come with the kit are slotted. When I got the kit the screws were not slotted making removal difficult on my engine. When I contacted SpeedSeal, they refused to provide the screws they advertise. The whole purpose of the kit is to make the saltwater impeller easier to replace.

Autopilot Replacement

Last summer the Alpha 3000 autopilot in Fair Wind, our 1982 Lord Nelson 41, developed a mind of its own and we had several disagreements on what heading was to be steered. After talking to the factory I cleaned and tightened all the connections but could never get "Otto" to steer the heading I wanted consistantly. The Alpha, from the PO's logs, appears to be original with the hydraulic ram being replaced in 1997. So I am looking at my autopilot options. Replacement with another Alpha would be the easiest route, everything is set up for it. But I also have a suite of Raymarine GPS, Radar and wind/depth/speed but no fluxgate compass for them. Any thought on my options? Or recomendations?

I have an in line trasmission in my trawler which only shifts into forward after i rev the engine. After it engages it's fine. Does anybody know why the delay? Also I saw a new product release for prop glop in the Coast Guard magazine in north Florida and tried it on the chine line below the boot stripe of my trawler. So far after 2 months there is no growth of any kind. My prop remains clean so far too. Good sailing!
