I am currently planning a true north-to-south circumnavigation: departing from Denmark to Iceland or Greenland, then transiting the Northwest Passage east to west toward Alaska.


From there, the route continues south down the US West Coast to Patagonia, onward via Drake Passage and into the Southern Polar regions, before turning east-north-east toward Cape Town, and north — returning to Denmark to complete the full circle circumnavigation.

My focus is very much on polar and expedition-style cruising.

As for the yacht itself, I am going with an insulated, (expedition-grade) alustar aluminium hull. Strong, simple, proven, and built for serious offshore conditions.

The keel will most definitely be a lifting keel, for a variety of practical and safety-related reasons.

For steering, I prefer twin rudders. It is all about redundancy, and reliability offshore with a variable-pitch propeller reducing or then creating drag.

The cockpit layout is another important consideration: a center cockpit, semi-enclosed, with an inboard forward-facing navigation station. Forward visibility, especially during long watches and difficult conditions, is of the utmost importance — 24/7.

Sixty-plus-foot explorer-specific yacht: no unnecessary bells and whistles, just comfortable, capable, proven, and reliable.

I just received partial ownership of a 45’ twin keel sailboat. It’s made of balsa wood and covered both sides with fibreglass. It’s home built and weighs 32000 lbs. it’s has a 80 hp ford leaman diesel in it. The boat is 95% complete. The boat is new but never been in the water. It’s over 40 years old. Should I finish it or should I try to sell it. The builder has a very large some of money invested in it.
