Hello fellow Cruisers,

I am trying to make a decision on what kind of used radar to equip.

So far I have looked at different locations and found different informations about what works and what does not... I guess that is because of posts/lists being compiled during different times. Also, the radar plugins mention what radars work with the corresponding plugin, but an overview matrix would be way more practical as an overview document. If this does not exist, and you agree the it should be up there in the documentation, I would gladly make one.

1.) Question:
Is there a complete list of known working radars for OCPN?

2.) Question:
I understand that magnetron radars are better for spotting squalls. I would prefer to have better squall detection. Is there a list of known working magnetron radars?

3.) Question:
Are there possibilities to use a magnetron radar directly with OCPN, or is it only possible to use them with a head unit that has a network output? If yes, are there any alternatives to make this work?

Cheers, G.

I'm curious why that would be a good idea? I ask out of ignorance. It seems to me that would be adding an unnecessary layer of complexity, at least from the user's point of view. Clearly there are some things I don't understand.

I ask here rather than derail the very active thread Call to redesign.

It is running Windows 11. This is an upgrade from my previous system. Using my previous system, I could double click on a current arrow and see a chart of the current for the day. However, the new version only shows text titled "Object Query" and the chart is not available. Can you tell me how to show the chart the way my other version did?

Hello everyone,

does anybody know of a simple way to save the complete help files for OCPN for offline use? OR is there a PDF file somewhere? I can only get single pages exported as a pdf in the wiki... That sounds unreasonable. I am sure I overlooked something...

Would highly appreciate any info on this... Already tried multiple WIKI downloaders, all seem to be broken... What the hell is going on? Is this the "online only" noose being tightened, or is it just me? I hope it's just my incompetence.

Regards, G.

I have downloaded & used openCPN previously, which is to say that I know what I am doing....

just now downloaded (from the OpenCPN site) OpenCPN onto a new computer (windows 11) and when the install finishes and program opens it is simply a window with a blank chart : no controls, no toolbar, menu tabs, etc. -- and even the windows "X" in upper right corner doesn't work to close the application! I have to use Task Manager and force it to end.

is this a known issue that the current downloads of OpenCPN result in a non-functional application?

Anyone would be interested to create a new generation of OpenCPN app in modern idiomatic C++ using AI?

Key features

- Less monolithic
- Touchscreen friendly
- UI and UX focused
- New marine protocol parsers supporting NMEA 2000/0183 Seatalk
- Designed to control everything from the cockpit
- With extensive automation of build and test cases
- Scalable graphics with support of range of resolution
- Consisting of a shell app and some sub apps which are launched only when they need to be displayed
- Not refactoring of existing OpenCPN (Maybe only using chart canvas)

Not using WxWidgets. Use GTK4 directly

It sounds scary but AI nowadays is amazingly strong.

Here are few designs it offered for brainstorming

What do you think?

My GPS network connection has stopped receiving data. It had been working fine.

I have a Windows 11 PC running Open CPN 5.14. GPS is available via my PepLink router. In the connection dialog I have entered Network, UDP, NMEA0183, the IP Address of the GPS source on my router, and the port number 2000 and have "receive input" checked. The PC has a wi-fi connection to the router. In Open CPN it shows a connection but no data flowing and the GPS indicator in the upper right is red and the vessel icon is black.

In the data monitor I see data for a "virtual" connection with just sentence $WMHVD (I believe that is an obsolete sentence).

If I close Open CPN and start Coastal Explorer, GPS data is coming in and displaying just fine. This with the same GPS settings on CE as describe above.

Any ideas what my problem is?

Hello everyone,

I have some NEMA AIS data coming from a CTRX Carbon AIS to the device running OCPN. The device is now a linux laptop, but will eventually be replaced by a R-Pi.

I would like to share the NEMA data OCPN is receiving to other devices on the same wifi network. This data will not only include the AIS, but also speed, depth etc.

The other devices on the wifi network will be android devices, running different navigation apps (Testing setup till I settle with something). Prolly also an android running linux with OCPN on top... :snorkel:

Anyway, this is the Question:

-Any known way to do this in OCPN?

I searched but I did not find unfortunately...
Only the other way around.

Thanks in advance!
Cheers, G.

Hi,

Hi,

I'm developing an OpenCPN plugin to display custom marine indices produced for data by Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC). The data comes in GRIB2 files with non-standard parameter numbers (e.g., parameterNumber=192, parameterNumber=193) that are not part of the standard WMO GRIB2 table.

Before reinventing the wheel, I'd like to understand what the recommended approach is for rendering arbitrary GRIB2 fields on the chart canvas:

Can the existing GRIB plugin be configured to handle custom/non-standard GRIB2 parameters? If so, is there documentation on how to extend its parameter table?

Can the GRIB plugin be modified/extended (e.g., via a patch or a fork) to support additional parameters without writing a full new plugin?

Is there an existing plugin that already handles arbitrary or user-defined GRIB2 fields, acting as a generic GRIB2 renderer?

If none of the above, I'll continue with my own plugin (which I already have working for the color overlay and direction arrows). In that case, are there any best practices or pitfalls to be aware of when rendering overlays alongside the GRIB plugin?

For context: my current plugin reads the GRIB2 files directly using ecCodes, renders a color-mapped scalar overlay and direction arrows via OpenGL, and navigates through 48 forecast time steps. It works, but I'm wondering if I'm duplicating work that already exists elsewhere.

Regarding distribution:

If I end up with a standalone plugin, I'd also like to understand how third-party plugins are distributed through OpenCPN's official plugin catalog. Specifically:

What is the process for submitting a plugin to the OpenCPN catalog so that users can install it directly from OpenCPN's plugin manager?
Are there requirements (build system, CI, metadata format, etc.) that the plugin must meet?
Is there a review or approval process?
Thanks in advance for any guidance.
