Thanks for letting me join today.
My husband has decided the best retirement boat for us is a slow and ugly workboat.
Years ago he had a lot of boating experience, and is quite handy. He said that if I am sceptical, I could write in write and get devil's advocate critiques, and present them to him.
He claimed he has valid reasons for all the various aspects of this one.
The workboat is the Damen Folla, the Follacat 15. They already have a series hybrid model, with 2, 180 HP motors, or maybe 180 kW. It's 15X12 meters, 10k liters of fuel. But instead of their usual gensets and battery bank in the hull, he wants them put on deck,,freeing up a lot of space in the hulls. He says the battery bank,,and two small diesels can easily be placed on deck, and certified by the agency for testing or whatever, DNV.
It won't look like a marina queen boat,,but is convinced it will be made comfy enough for me, once optimized for living on board, to sail around the world at only 5kts.
Please send any criticisms and let's see what he says.

I'm having issues with my Sub Zero frig/freezer Model 801RF ( 1985 vintage side by side). I'm looking for someone who is qualified to service a Sub Zero on Vancouver Island BC. There is a guy who apparently services Sub Zero in Victoria. However he doesn't do boats.
The frig and freezer both have randomly warned up a few times. The milk doesn't go bad, but it's fairly warm. It just happened today. It happened back in last Sept., and it happened about a year ago.
I just recently sucked all the dust out of the cooling fins and I try to do that regularly. It also makes really loud noises randomly. Like a bearing just seized. Sounds like playing cards in the spokes. ( only old farts car relate to that) But then it stops instantly after 5 minutes or so. It's been doing that for probably close to a decade. About maybe a couple times a year.
Other than that, it works great.

I want to head north for a few months before turning back south and getting to California before next winter.

Anything I absolutely should not miss between Port Hardy and Sitka/Jeneau? Should I go further north. I am solo on a Nordavn 40.

I remember how the oil shock of the 1970s resulted in a lot of boaters switching to sail (and how sailing experienced a boom at that time), but can we expect the same to happen again if oil prices remain high?
