I'm not sure if this is a negative or positive review.

I bought a new Garmin gWind (wired) transducer to replace an old Nexus device that was failing. It worked fine but after a year started making a ticking noise as it rotated, which became a steady buzz at higher wind speeds. I wouldn't even have noticed it except it resonated down the mast and was quite audible in the cabin in certain conditions.

This is not like any of the other gWind failures documented in other threads; it seems like a mechanical problem.

I contacted Garmin, they confirmed it was on warranty, and requested a video showing the instrument turning and recording the sound. Fair enough, another trip up the mast. With that they immediately offered an exchange and the new one is now installed.

So, I'm not happy that I had the problem, but the customer support response was absolutely top notch. And I'm getting really good at climbing the mast.

Hello -

Question: are gasoline rated fuel filters problematic if being used in diesel engines?

Engine is a Perkins 4108 with perpetual contaminated fuel problem. As you can imagine, its been through a lot of fuel filters already.

My problem is that even after I've changed the filters, I am getting 40-45psi on the vacuum gauge at the fuel filter.

I replaced both primary and secondary fuel filters. The one by the engine is rated for diesel applications at 4 microns (carquest). I recently found out the 10 micron racor s3227 I am using is labeled for gasoline applications, though I read that people use them on the perkins engine without problems. S3227TUL is the diesel rated filter.

I've also blown out my fuel pickup with an air compressor so there shouldn't be a problem there. I guess I could try blowing out the fuel lines between the filter and the tank too. I'll double check to see if I have any kinks or other hose restrictions, but thought I'd ask here about the filter.

Paragon Direct Drive transmission stuck forward (similar to Atomic 4)

Hello -

Hello -
I have a perkins 4108 w/ Paragon SA0-D transmission. Its a reversing band transmission, extremely similar to the Atomic 4 direct drive unit.

When I run the engine for a long time (8+ hours), my transmission seems to get stuck in forward. Its not a cable problem. When it happened the first time, I was able to free it with a rubber mallet at the shift lever by the transmission (not the pedestal). This time, the mallet isn't doing the trick. Visually, the transmission looks fine.

Even if something more serious, like the spline gear or the planetary gear is broken, or the clutch plates are fused together, there shouldn't be anything preventing the op cone from sliding back and forth right?

So to isolate possibilities, I'm thinking its one of the following -
-The 'fingers' that go into the groove are bound up for one reason or another
-There is a foreign object stuck between the tail shaft and the cone
-Something that I am not seeing broke off and got stuck between the cone and something else
-Reverse bar is jammed for one reason or another (I have no idea how this would be jammed)

These are the items I'd like to look at next time I am on the boat. I'll get a flash light under there and check the cross bar and the shifting yoke as well.
Any insights to this problem? could something else be wrong?

I am 3 hours away from the boat but I'd like to go look at it again later this week. I'm missing out on the racing season!

Hi everyone,

Hi everyone,

I have a 1989 Hunter Legend 40 with what I believe is a Forespar E-Z Furl / E-Z Foil in-mast mainsail furling system. I’m trying to sort out an issue with the fitting/bearing/swivel assembly above the furling screw.

I’ve attached a few photos. The area I’m concerned about is marked with the red arrow/red box. It is the assembly directly above the large furling screw/shaft, where the rotating tube appears to enter the upper bearing/swivel area.

I have already replaced the bearing at the bottom of the furling screw, but I still have to use a winch to furl and unfurl the mainsail. My assumption is that this system should furl and unfurl reasonably easily by hand, at least in normal/light conditions, without needing a winch. Because replacing the lower bearing did not solve the problem, I’m now wondering if the issue is in this upper fitting/swivel/bearing area.

I’m looking for advice from anyone who has taken this apart or rebuilt one of these units.

Specifically, I’d like to know:

What is this part officially called?
Upper swivel? Upper bearing? Retaining collar? Something else?
How is it removed?
Does the whole lower furling assembly have to come apart first so this fitting can slide down and off the extrusion/shaft, or can it be serviced in place?
What parts usually need replacing?
I’m especially interested in whether there are Torlon balls, a spiral retaining ring, bearing races, seals/washers, or clips inside this assembly.
Does anyone have part numbers or dimensions?
Any part numbers for the retaining ring, bearings, Torlon balls, clips, or other rebuild parts would be hugely appreciated.
Could something else still be causing the friction?
For example: halyard tension, sail luff tension, outhaul angle, boom angle, sail bunching, furling screw alignment, or another bearing I may have missed.
Any gotchas before I take this apart?
For example: loose ball bearings falling out, hidden retaining clips, seized stainless/aluminum fasteners, special tools needed, or anything that should be marked/photographed before disassembly.
Any recommendations on cleaning/lubrication?
I want to avoid using the wrong grease or lubricant if the bearings are plastic/Torlon or if the system is meant to run mostly dry.

My goal is to understand the correct disassembly sequence and order the right parts before I start pulling this apart. I don’t want to damage an old/discontinued furling system by forcing something that should come apart another way.

Any photos, diagrams, manual pages, part numbers, or first-hand experience with this Forespar E-Z Furl / E-Z Foil system would be very helpful.

Thanks in advance.

Hi Everyone,

I'm replacing a broken stanchion on my 1989 Hunter Legend 40, and I've run into a problem that I'm hoping someone else has experienced.

To get the new stanchion on, I need to remove the threaded eye fitting from the end of the lifeline so I can feed the cable through the stanchion. The eye screws onto the threaded stud of the swaged fitting, but after nearly 40 years it won't budge.

I've been soaking it with penetrating oil for several days, and I'm going to try again this weekend with a second person. My biggest challenge is figuring out the best way to secure the round swaged fitting so it doesn't rotate while I'm trying to unscrew the eye. Since the fitting is completely round, there's nothing to get a wrench on without risking damage.

A few questions:

Has anyone with a Hunter Legend had to remove one of these fittings to replace a stanchion?
If so, what did you use to hold the swaged fitting while unscrewing the eye?
Were the threads assembled with Loctite at the factory, or are they simply seized after years of service?
Are there any tricks or specialized tools that worked for you?

I'd really appreciate hearing from anyone who's tackled this job before. Photos of your setup or the tools you used would be especially helpful.

Thanks in advance!

I have always used Power Assist from my Multiplus sparingly, in the belief that it's not good for lead batteries to short cycle them. I noticed that a very short period of drawing power from the batteries to supply Power Assist, would trigger another absorption cycle, which surely cannot be a good thing.

On of the joys I'm looking forward to with lithium is the absence of this problem (if it indeed exists), and now with a much more powerful Multiplus (24/5000/120), I'll use Power Assist to my heart's content.

But was in fact worrying about nothing? It's only a matter of idle curiosity at this stage, but does it wear out lead batteries to cycle them like that for Power Assist?

Super Typhoon “Bavi” made landfall, over the tiny US territorial island of Rota, in the western Pacific, 50 miles North of Guam, bringing powerful winds, and torrential rain [>51cm] to the Northern Mariana Islands.

In addition to Rota, typhoon and flash flood warnings were in effect for Guam, Tinian and Saipan, while tropical storm warnings and watches were in place for other islands in the area.

The Northern Mariana Islands, and the nearby US territory of Guam, are collectively home to around 210,000 people.

Some of the islands were still reeling from a previous typhoon, “Sinlaku”, that hit the region, in April.
Many people, living in Saipan, and nearby Tinian, had been without power, since ‘Sinlaku’.

Bavi is expected to leave the Marianas, by Monday afternoon heading generally west, at 10 mph to 13 mph.
Currently in the Balearics and not on Facebook so no access to marketplace.

As it's unregistered, I thought it'd be easier to offer to international cruisers. Have you come across good marketplaces other than the one on here?
