On some bulkheads the laminated joints show visible cracks. Is that serious or normal? Should it be repaired, and can one keep sailing for now? Does anyone have experience with this?

I can find where I think it should go, and understand that the new version may not display the 0183 sentences..or select from, as no such window shows up, nor can I add them manually.
First post, new to the forum.

I’m going to be crossing from Brest to Plymouth this Saturday on the family boat. It’s a Beneteau 40-something.

Just curious to know what the more experienced sailors can tell telll me what to expect. I have done the basics and sailed the boat 3-4 times from Southampton across Lyme Bay, but this is a much bigger task.

My skipper is experienced so not worried, just wondered if anyone here has done this trip in similar weather and can give me an idea what it might be like.

Thanks for any advice 👍

The pump is shaft-driven, with a gasket between the engine and pump body. Installing the pump without any lubrication on the gasket results in oil leakage at the interface between the two. The engine's service manual says to use "non-drying adhesive" on gaskets so I'm figuring I should use some sort of lubricant or sealer. What product should I use?

The engine is Universal M-50B diesel. The pump model is Oberdorfer N202M-15.

I have 2 of the Volvo penta D2-55E engines on my cat. From the factory, they came with a idiot warning system for alternator, oil pressure and coolant temperature. A little buzzer goes off to warn of an issue. It does not tell you what the issue is or how close you are to destroying the engine. What a stupid system.

I want to leave the factory system installed, and add a secondary system with gauges. The oil pressure is simple, I put a "T" in the fitting to the existing on/off oil pressure sensor and add one that has a gauge output.

The temperature is the tricky one. Choices are:

1 There is a threaded hole in the block to the coolant in the block. It is not used and about 1.5 inches higher than where the factory temp sensor is. I could put it in this hole.

2. I have seen suggestions on this forum to measure the coolant as it leaves the engine. Strap an electronic sensor to the hose where it comes out of the engine.

3. Strap or mount a sensor to the block somewhere?

4. other ideas?

Additionally, I have a question about putting a sensor in block measuring the coolant temp. What happens if you spring a leak and the coolant level decreases to below the temp sensor??? Will the temp the sensor sees increase of decrease because of lack of coolant arond it???

Thanks all in advance!

I've looked at the RYA off offshore and ocean certs/tests and would likely quality and there are likely other things like insurance to consider which I have no idea about insurance for this scenario. Also, what qualifications might the boat owner insurance have? For example of one instance company - I was willing to deliver a boat no charge but the owner's insurance wanted a certified skipper with at least one ocean crossing.

Also, as a side question - would any of those non-UDCG certs allow for the USCG six-pack license (or higher)?

I'll never get used to strong squalls at night while anchored in a narrow creek.

On Monday Night about midnight, a squall came through with winds gusting over 40 knots.

No matter how many times my anchor and rode have held the boat without dragging in these conditions, It's still a worry until it's over especially at night.

Unfortunately the old metal bucket the PO had got knocked overboard during one of the gusts that laid the boat over a bit. That bucket must have been made in the 1950's. I had it near the bow under the forward part of my kayak.

I use it to wash away the marsh mud that comes up on the anchor an chain.

Because the minutes are already paid for, you don't need to get a monthly plan or take any actions. Just start using.
The minutes expire after two years, so since I activated it in August '25, they'll expire in August '27.
The phone number is written on the phone itself.
Our mainsail has become much harder to set and drop over the past few months
It has Harken Battcars (large cars at batten ends and smaller cars in between)
These are 20 years old, 50,000 miles, having been used on successive mainsails.

We have washed the track to be sure it is clean and lubricated with One Drop. That helped quite a bit.

Is it worth replacing the balls?

Any other ideas?
