What are your thoughts on sailing video blogs?

I want to have some up-to-date info for the seminar I am presenting in Port Townsend in September on how to earn money as you cruise through writing, blogging and video. Appreciate your thoughts on following questions:
1. Do you follow any sailing video blogs
2. Do you subscribe to the video blog
3. How do you choose which you follow
4. How often do you want to see a new video
5. What makes you stop following a video blog
6. Are you willing to pay to support a video blog
I am posting this request in several places to see how responses differ.
Thanks for helping me help other sailors.

1 Yes, a few.
2. Yes, all the ones I like, that are producing ongoing videos.
3. Tend to favour those travelling in interesting places that have knowledge and tips to pass on, either about the places they visit or their cruising lifestyle.
4. Definitely quality over quantity. When following a few blogs, a gap between episodes isn't too big a deal.
5. When the videos descend into "Meet the Kardashians" clones, start to become one long video selfie or start to forget their videos are based on a sailing theme.
6. Generally no, but have made donations when the production quality is good and the makers aren't obviously dripping with funds or sponsership.

SV Delos.
SV Delos.
SV Delos.

I choose sailing video blogs by video/episode quality, and the SV Delos has this down to a fine art. I watch every other friday religiously for new episodes.

I dont like shaky video, blair witch type videos. And I dont like repetitive content.

Re: What are your thoughts on sailing video blogs?

Dear Mr Pardey... I have admired you and your wife for many years, read your books and followed your travels always appreciating your minimalist approach to life at sea.
I have never read sailing blogs or watched sailing videos preferring to do it rather than look at it.
I am now the other side of 75 and my sailing/cruising days are over, unfortunately. Occasionally, I will re-read my old logs that bring bring back both good and frightening memories but that is about it.
I wish you well and am delighted to know you are still out there.
Won't be long before I will be joining my old friend, William Gardner, with whom I hold the same level of esteem as I do you. Cheers, Phil

1. Do you follow any sailing video blogs -No
2. Do you subscribe to the video blog -No
3. How do you choose which you follow - Blogs in general: It's something we are interested in doing typically.
4. How often do you want to see a new video - Blogs in general: a couple times a week as long as it doesn't degrade into what we had for dinner last night.
5. What makes you stop following a video blog -Blogs in general: degrading into what we had for dinner last night or weeks, months between posts (occasional breaks say for a crossing are OK). Asking for money/turning it commercial
6. Are you willing to pay to support a video blog- No there are plenty of free blogs

The biggest issue for cruisers is most are still dealing with comparatively slow and expensive internet access and video requires high speed expensive connections.

I think the days of anyone throwing up a blog and getting rich are over. Even turning a modest profit enough to pay for good production equipment will be tough. There are the rare exception but usually it's a lot of luck and basically a full time job.

I once followed a basic blog involving a sistership to mine for a while as the owner was fixing stuff but once he stopped fixing stuff and it started to feature family and food I stopped.

I do watch 'Youtube' videos of people fixing stuff...

No.

No.

Generally don't care for videos. My guess, Lin, is that yours would be different, but 99.9% of the ones that I have wasted my time looking at are just horrible. Badly filmed, poorly edited, repetitive, boring content, etc. As a result of this I almost never bother to look at videos anymore. I would much rather have something that I can read at my own pace, and maybe a video as a supplement, in case I decide I'm willing to watch.

Good luck, whatever you end up doing.

Re: What are your thoughts on sailing video blogs?

I like watching some of them... many times for just entertainment but also to see how other boats are set up for cruising and how different people handle the same problems in different ways. Most fail to discuss things like picking weather for passages and so forth and general passage planning and so forth. Still, I find them entertaining most of the time.

1. Yes - Delos (of course), Prism, Resolute, and some others

2. Yes, I do subscrige

3. Quality of the video work and sound (sound is a big one!) Also, if they are cruising in areas I am interested in. I also like a good mix of sailing and land-based info.

4. Weekly is ideal

5. All that I've started following I'm still following

6. I have not paid, mostly because we are saving to begin cruising ourselves

I hope this helps!

Re: What are your thoughts on sailing video blogs?

I post how-to sailing videos on YouTube. I've never asked for money but sometimes ask for people to watch the commercial$.
